3 lesbians wish to define a "family" as a threesome in Canadian court.

Lesbian Threesome...mmmmmm

Now with that out of the way...

As most of you know, Canada legally recognized gay marriage last year, which expanded the definition of marriage from a man and a woman to a woman and a woman or a man and a man.

But what's the next step? Why should other alternative lifestyles be exempt from the term "marriage" or "family"? Under the logic of the Canadian marriage decision, a three parent family shouldn't be excluded from being a family either. In fact, there's a case in Canadian courts where three lesbians are wanting joint legal custody as parents of a boy born from in vitro fertilization. Welcome to the new "family":

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20060927.THREEPARENTS27/TPStory/?query=three+parents

Under this same logic, government employees should be able to include a third partner as "family" for benefits at the expense of the state and you, the taxpayer.

I know most liberals are reluctant to draw lines for anything, but do you really think a family or marriage should have limitless definitions? How should a nation define these terms and legal rights attached to them?

I once saw a definition of "family" that was written by a little girl. I forget what age. I agree with her definition.

"Two people, or more than two people, who love each other."

That's a nice definition. A bit vague though. Does that count lifelong platonic friends? Can they get married because they love each other? How about more general love, we like to talk about the "Family of God", can I marry everyone in my church?? Hey now, that might be an idea...think of the tax deductions!!

You might be smarter than i thought, Rick. I don't have a problem if yuo want to marry everyone in your Parish. Fact is, as you perhaps are pointing out, it's all about money. "Marriage" is, after all, a tax and medical insurance category.

The only contentious issue for many conservative Canadians is survivorship benefits like Canada pension plan etc. Where do you draw the line as to who is eligible and for how long?

My little boy would add the dog and bird into the definition of "family," too.

Be careful! That sounds like deviant behavior! Is there a priest or alcohol involved?

Yep, unfortunately marriage has been so degraded in our society that it is currently seen as simply a legal status for tax purposes. I view marriage more in the classic sense, a covenant before God made between a man and a woman for life. Just because society has reduced marriage to some legal loophole doesn't mean I have to agree.

Your position on marriage is interesting coming from an avowed Catholic. I'm not so sure the Pope would agree with you...

Are you telling me gay marriage is the biggest problem that the US has? Who cares? Nobody is forcing you to be with some one you don't want to be with. Why is it up to me a to say that a gay couple can't enjoy the same rights and privileges and HAPPINESS that my wife and I have?

3 women want to get married in Canada? Well that just proves we have attention whores here as well

Don't even get me started on health care!

It's the biggest problem we have near elections. The rest of the time nobody cares.

What of those religious cults where the head guy gets to bang all the chicks and underaged children?

I'm starting a religious cult. And I have big feet. Be afraid... I'll start telling you what to do when you run over the neighbor's cat...

Um, no I'm not telling you that. Where did you get that idea? This thread is about marriage though so...we talk about marriage.

If you want to start a "Biggest problem the US has" thread feel free.
