Even better are gems such as "no holes barred" and "for all intensive purposes"

Speeder - that's exactly what I'm talking about. They write like they speak - colloquially - and it's obvious they have no idea that they're wrong. It's as if they've never read anything, otherwise how do you explain "could of"?

errors run amuck tither and yarn...

I write for a living - this is playtime. Now that is different than worktime. Work product is polished, focused, and well compensated. It is much like game day. Playtime (the OT) is a time for frivolous abandonment and a joyous spew of rants, quips, and rebuttals.

$10,000 per student? Wow! I hope your hard-earned tax bucks are being watched. I know that our town leads North Texas in money spent and thank the good Lawd that our students get into more top-notch universities than any other school district. You best keep a close eye on that school board of yours. That is a lot-o-cabbage to fund a kid that cannot spell ‘immigration’, locate Idaho on a map, or explain the transitive property.

Lubermaster - I realize that most write here for fun, and I'm not talking about simple mistakes, minor punctuation etc. I refer baack to Speeder's post - they have no idea how far off they are. They are not taking liberites for fun or speed or affect - they just can't write - at all.

And I do believe that Texan's probably, for the most part, do a much better job educating their children than Californians. And for reasons other than JUST academic, my children attend a private pariochial school.

I'm waiting with baited breath for an answer to that...

'bated breath? That's actually a hard one! I bet not 1 in 1000 Americans knows that baited breath is incorrect. Or that Shakespeare isn't just a screenwriter who works with Kenneth Branagh. ;)

I helped my uncle jack off a horse.

I helped my uncle Jack, off a horse.

Notice the difference?

I make a good honest living off people who can't write, so I try be grateful instead of annoyed.

livi 10-17-2006 09:36 AM

I am relieved I have an excuse. You try writing in Swedish.

When it counts I right correctly. Firefox + Pelican = no spelchick.

I am a Land Surveyor by trade, we are supposed to suck at spelling its almost a prerequisite for the job. If I could spell and was smart I would be a Civil Engineer.

My friend has a 4 year degree from U of F in Land Surveying. When asked why he chose a 4 year degree in Surveying, he replied, "My guidance counselor told me I was too stupid to be an Engineer." --- True story, he was asked this question in a Surveyors continuing education seminar. Half the room roared with laughter the other half got really pissed. I laughed because its true.

When I need to write a letter I use Word and spellcheck, then I have my receptionist proof read it. When I am on PPOT its play time. Sorry.

I certainly understand the worktime vs playtime concept of writing but I believe many don't make an effort to distinguish the difference. That is unfortunate. Many people could achieve greater success in life if they just took the time to spell check and proof read.

Unfortunately, they just don't care.

Jims5543 10-17-2006 09:59 AM

Jake - Done on purpose, notice Spelchick. ;)

I tried my best to spell correctly through the entire post without the aid of spellcheck.

Depends on whether your uncle is a jockey, animal husbandry specialist, or a hit-man for the equine mafia.
