Outlook Email error code 0x800CCC78
I keep getting this today. Haven't changed anything, tried lots of stuff on the google search, something about going from port 25 to 587, but no love. Anyone have any thoughts? I seem to receive OK, but can't send. Is says
"The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was 'hugh.rose@comcast.net'. Subject 'test', Account: 'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '530 Authentication required', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 530, Error Number: 0x800CCC78"

Hey, Leatherneck!
Have you tried looking through this page? Perhaps your account has gotten corrputed. Try setting up another one with identical settings and see what happens. If that doesn't work. Another possible fix. Semper fi! Randy Another possible fix.

Thanks Randy:
That page gives me "Unknown sender. This is caused by having the incorrect e-mail address in the Reply-To field." I'm getting the same message for mine, my wife's and sons email. I also looked for agreement with my firewall regarding the 25 and 110 ports for sending and receiving email and they seem to agree. I'll try setting up an identical new account on OE and see what happens.

port 25 is plain old smtp, 587 is smptp auth. with the old version (which just about everyone uses but shouldn't) anyone can send email as anybody. want an email from george bush dated in 1984? its all sent by your client settings... smtpauth requires a valid user/password on the mail sending machine (what your ISP hosts, not the computer you are sitting at). Double check your settings in Outlook and if it all looks right call your ISP.

Comcast support will be able to walk you thru this-it may be you have the "secure connection" box checked in the account option page or that you need to. Comcast screws around with your email ports as well if you're address gets hijacked by a spamer or spam program and someone complains about spam w/ your addy.

Thanks guys, I'm on the phone to Comcast right now. Everything looked as it should be on my end of the OE settings.

A few months ago I got a virus on a laptop that apparently started sending out a load of e-mails all over. Unbeknown to me (at the time) Comcast caught this and placed a b lock on my outgoing e-mail from Outlook Express. The laptop was just one I used occasionally for downloads and other 'questionable' crap like that, so since it had a virus, I wiped it and threw an image back on it. Up and running in an hour or so, from discovery of the e-mail. Anyway, to the point, when I called Comcast support to find out if they could help figure out why I could receive, but couldn't send anything out, their whiz-kid support rep politely informed me that the issue was 'definitely' the microsoft e-mail servers. (SERIOUSLY!) Her reasoning was that, since I could log onto the Comcast website and send e-mail from there, it had to be a Microsoft issue, since I was using Outlook Express as my e-mail client. While working with this knuckle-head, I started digging around my e-mails when I discovered the one that Comcast had sent me informing me of them port-blocking my outgoing e-mail. When I informed the Comcast support rep of this e-mail, she told me that couldn't be the issue because Comcast wouldn;t do something like that. She persisted that my issue was with Microsoft, especially since I was using a Microsoft e-mail client. She even "checked with her supervisor" whom she said confirmed, 100% it was a Microsoft thing. Anyway, long story short, I was finally able to convince them what had happened and even got them to un-block me. This support rep was a serious goon. Hugh, if you;re still on the line with Comcast, make sure they haven't blocked you due to a virus, like they did me. (Wish I had remembered this earlier! ![]() Good luck, Devildog! Randy

Is your email client set up to have smtp authentication? It used to be ok for your email client to only use a username and password to check for email from a remote server. Most providers now want you to use the same username ans password in order to send email as well. This cuts down on a lot of poeple being able to spoof email addresses and send email thru servers they are not supposed to. Maybe Comcast is now requiring this?

75 minutes on hold with comcast, now time warner and no one picks up. I'll try again today, I don't see anything abut smtp authorization for outgoing mail. Here is what I have:
Using OE6 I go to tools>accounts> properties, General page mail.comcast.net, name=my name, email=myemail@comcast.net; Under Servers Pop3, incoming=mail.comcast.net, outgoing=smtp.comcast.net, account name=myemail@comcast.net password=********** which is correct; Security Algorithm=3DES; Advanced outgoing=25, incoming=110 I'm ready for a mac or something.

Under the "Servers" tag, there should be a check box at the bottom that says "My server requires authentication", check that, and then to the right you should be able to click on the "Settings" button. This should open another tab and you should see "Logon information. It should default to "Use same settings as my incoming mail server". This should be ok. Click ok or apply and try to check your emal again.

After an hour on hold, I finally got through. Time Warner bought Comcast in Socal and changed me over without telling me. I finally got it resolved.

I had to go to a time warner site and enable my emails and change my outlook from comcast.net to ca.rr.com for my email extensions in the pop3 and the smtp. You think they could have sent me and a few million other comcast subscribers an email saying what they were going to do and how I could make the changes myself, but Noooo! they make me sit on the phone for an hour. Thanks very much guys. Anyone with Comcast in SoCal who suddenly can't send email can PM me and I'll try and help them out. In fact I think I'll post a new thread on this. Thanks everyone.

Dear Microsoft-
Thank you for going the extra mile to tell us of this important error (0x800CCC78) instead of crashing, and with such descriptiveness that even the most basic user, such as myself, could understand the issue and resolve it quickly and without outside help. Its because of your commitment to the "user experience" that I continue to purchase your products. Sincerly, Buttkiss McBumble**** PS: I can hardly wait to get my hands on your new Zune player!
