INSANE crash pics...Jeep meets traffic light pole

Dad just emailed this to me, apparently it happened 3 days ago the next town over (which isn't very far...10 minutes maybe). The article stated the driver died. Jeep must have been going at some kind of speed to crush like that.

Drive safely guys.

Interesting as I thought poles like that were designed to "break away" to avoid the very thing we see above. Either that or Jeep is making their vehicles out of old Pabst cans.

Wow, first ever case I've seen where "wrapped it around a [insert cylindrical object here]" could actually be taken literally.

wouldn't a jeep have enough force to knock the pole down? Wow crazy pics...

Roof is soft, hit up high - bad combo.

I didn't think a vehicle could roll off a two truck fast enough as to bend a lightpole.

So he made contact with the blue wrangler. I am trying to piece this one together. Looking at the first picture, the Red Jeep was going pretty damn fast, so I have to assume that at this intersection, he wasn't waiting at a red light and then going at green. He ran a red at a high rate of speed, and the blue wrangler made contact with the right rear of the passing red jeep, causing it to violently swing the back out ~90 degrees to the right. Then the tires clip the curb as the vehicle leans precariously, causing it to turn onto its side just before the pole. I anticipate that a vehicle with a curved roof might have fared better due to the inherent strength of an arch in that scenario, but even so it seems unlikely that most vehicles could survive this impact.

Rammstein, good call. I, too, was wondering how in the heck that happened.

Just out of curiosity, would the same thing have happened to a sedan/sports car? I assume part of the reason the Jeep rolled is due to the high CG when his tired made contact with the curb. Although, I think, with a large enough velocity, a sedan would flip, too.

No one designs a roof for tight concentration of force like a light pole. If the Liberty had rollod onto a flat surface, it wouldn't look so bad.

I can hit you with a 2X12 flat on the chest and you'd be OK. It would hurt like a mofo, but you'd probably live. If I hit you with that same 2X12 with the 2" side at with the same force, you'd be hurting far worst. I might even crush your rib cage.

It's not a Liberty. It's a Commander. Their Suburban challenger.

Seems like the Wrangler made contact with the left front quarter of the Commander? Maybe Wrangler turned left in front of him or Commander ran light ? Commander dodged a bit to the right, scraped (check color damage on left front qtr) the Wrangler, and started to roll when it caught the curb sideways. Very bad. I agree the pole should have snapped at something like 30-40 mph - but even then it's probably not survivable.

It'd be interesting to see a diagram of how that happened. It looks like a fairly low speed impact, initially. Maybe the Commander caught a wheel...

What's with the T-tops? That couldn't have helped.

In answer to other questions, any vehicle can flip if it catches a curb just wrong. Obviously an SUV will lift that much easier. Sad.

Fatal Crash In Waukegan

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (STNG) -- A Beach Park man was killed and a Gurnee woman injured Monday morning when their cars collided at a north suburban Waukegan intersection.

Witnesses told police that at about 8:20 a.m., Kery Bond of Beach Park was driving a Jeep Commander southbound on Route 43 entering the Norman Drive intersection when a 2004 Jeep Wrangler, driven by Ashley Story, turned westbound from the northbound lanes on Route 43 and struck Bond’s vehicle, according to a release from Waukegan police.

The impact caused the Commander to slide across the intersection and strike a traffic light support, police said.

According to the release, Bond, 35,who suffered internal injuries, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coroner’s office.

Story, 42, was transported to Condell Health Network in Libertyville with a broken leg, the release said. She was treated and released. The Gurnee woman was cited with making an improper left turn, Waukegan police Cmdr. Wayne Walles said.

Story and Bond were the only occupants in their vehicles, the release said.

Waukegan Police Major Traffic Accident Investigators continue to investigate the accident.

"cited for improper left hand turn"

what about manslaughter? what about reckless driving? how about a civil lawsuit?

seriously if she caused something like that with her stupidity, then she needs to be accountable for more than just a ticket.

This reminds me of and incident recently where a female driver to my right, who did a U-turn from the right hand lane just in front of me as I was in the left hand lane next to her....trying to cross 3 lanes with her U-turn...

I would have T-boned her if not for the superior brakes of the 993. As it was, I came about 1 foot from hitting her and she just looked at me and sped off...

That woman was worthless, imo.
