been there. It really is cool. The locals used to freashwater fish there. After that little incident happened the salinity rose and its not uncommon to catch redfish in the lake.

How bad must those drillers feel? Talk about the domino effect.

As a geologist, I've been around a lot of drill rigs. The worst thing we ever hit was a 4-foot pressurized water main. (The town of Oakley went without water for two days.) The driller jumped in the truck real quick and got it out of there before the hole swallowed everything. We made a 30-foot geyser. Cool!

I didn't feel so bad about it, in terms of being at fault, because we drilled right where the water company guy told us it was safe. He was mighty sheepish, after that.

I've seen the show that the vid is from on discovery channel or one of those channels. Amazing story. You wouldn't think that 10 feet of water and a hole 14" across with a drill bit in it could create that type of problem, but I guess when the hole is 1300-1500 feet deep the pressure at the bottom of the hole is pretty extreme.

Really amazing story.

this about the saltmine/lake in south Lousiana? didn't watch the video (dial up) but know the story I think. one of our barges was working in the lake, got sucked down the hole and popped up later my father told me.. don't know how true that was, but the barge was working there the time that happened..

yeah, that's it... about 30-40 minutes from here. I heard it was caused by some mis-directed directional drilling.
