Is the 928 coming back?

2012 Porsche 928 - Car News
Porsche to put out a new front-engine coupe in 2011. The upcoming four-door Panamera spawns a two-door GT

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 928, Porsche's front-engine entry in the coupe GT market, never quite enjoyed the success of the signature sports car, the 911. Since Porsche stopped producing the 928 in 1995 after an 18-year run, the German automaker has gone without a front-engine coupe to compete with the likes of the BMW M6, Jaguar XKR, Aston-Martin DB9, and Mercedes CL-class. The 911, which remains much more the pure sports car than any of the coupes, has gradually moved farther upmarket and provides a sporting alternative to those cars, but it now appears that Porsche is developing a more direct competitor for the front-engine GTs, a coupe that sources suggest will be in showrooms by 2011. Porsche might even name it the 928.

They won't name it the 928. I can almost guarantee that. My money is on a name, not a number.

I predict that they will try to make is look related to the 911 rather than make it attractive - just like they did with the SUV.

An ugly, gas-guzzling pig for over $100G ought to do really well in about 5 years. I'll bet they sell at least 3 of them before going BK.

It would take a lot more than one car line failure to put Porsche bankrupt at this point; they've been the most profitable car company in the world since 1996. They now own a controlling interest in the VW group, which is a public trust, and plan on buying more. Even with the Cayenne as a moderate success, Porsche made a fortune on the pepper-wagon.

No, Porsche is going to be just fine. I only wish I bought shares of Porsche AG stock back in 1995. Alas, I was only fourteen.

It seems the mass marketed cars get names. The serious cars get numbers.

Nah, Porsche is just moving away from numbers. If they could get away with it, they would simply call the "911" the "carrera", but this would cause more problems and confusion than solutions. The last car that was marketed as a number was the 968, and I am positive it will remain that way.
