I can identify with the comments from pwd72s (Paul I believe), since I'm in my mid 60s. I was always physically very active and still am for "someone my age." Luckily, I still wear pants with the same waist size I did at 32 (32 in.) when I was half my current age.
Everybody is different, but about the best I can do (from my prospective) is offer a comment and a bit of advise. The comment is that, whatever you OVERDO to yourself when you are younger will come back to haunt you when you get older. The advise is "everything in moderation." I can tell you you still want to have as much fun doing things when you are older as when you are younger. If you've overstressed yourself at a younger age, you'll limit yourself more when you get older.
The other thing is to listen to your body as you get older and go with the flow. When I was 58, I was lifting what I thought wasn't too much. But, my joints were aching, and I couldn't figure out why (thought it was mostly natural with age). It finally dawned on me it could be the weights. I stopped lifting as heavy and my joints quit hurting. Another example is that I have hiked, climbed and backpacked enough miles to go across the US and more than half way back. Mostly with heavy packs. As you get older, the pads on the bottoms of your feet get thinner, and my former afforts didn't help matters any. So now, when I'm hiking downhill for a pretty long time with a pack, my feet really kill me. Getting old sucks, and don't let anybody try to tell you different. The best you can do is try to prolong you activities as long as you can.

Getting old is like being just a little sick and a little tired.....all the time.

I may not be as good as I once was, but I'm as good once as I ever was.

I now measure recovery times in terms of months and years instead of days and weeks. It hurts to type this because I almost broke my right arm fouling some young punk this a.m. playing basketball.

I am waiting for Stijn to check in, telling us old geeks to get a grip.

And, if we are lucky, recommending some of his personal favorites cocktails. :D

And he is probably right on the button.

VINMAN 11-07-2006 09:07 AM

At 41, I still do the same things I did in my 20( and then some). Havent slowed down a bit. Only problem I noticed is my recovery time is about 5 times longer!

Despite playing lots of contact sports and working in the construction trades most of my youth, I was injury-free for the first 40 years of my life. I was hit so hard in the side once that I pissed blood for a week. Not a single rib fracture.

Then I turned 40...

Plantar fasciitis.
Torn labrum and shoulder reconstruction.
Several fractured ribs.
Broken foot.
Chronic knee and hip pain.

Every morning I wake up and "take inventory". Pop a few Advil and I'm on my way.
I'm 48 now and I fully expect that by the time I'm 60, I'll break something if I sneeze too violently.

speaking of getting older, anyone know what causes a persistant pain in the muscles around my femur? My knees click (they always have) been to a few docs about it. All they can tell me is that its likely a buildup of calcium around the patella irritating the muscles. If I apply some pressure to the muscle right above my kneecap, it helps a bit. I usually just take 400mg of ibuprofen a day and the pain goes completley away.

pwd72s 11-07-2006 09:15 AM

Being 60 is nature's revenge. Payback for snickering at your parents and grandparents when they complained of aches & pains....:D

JavaBrewer 11-07-2006 09:26 AM

I'm 44 TODAY - Whoo Hooo!
I'm finding that the abuse I subjected my body to in my 20's and 30's is coming back to haunt me. My back, knees, and shoulders are a source of constant pain. I don't sleep well anymore. My cholesterol and weight are both up. My vision was always bad but correctable but now not so good with glasses/contacts - nightime vision is really horrific.

Other than those issues - I'm having the time of my life!

bigchillcar 11-07-2006 09:45 AM

broken big toe
sprained ankle
broken little finger with crushed knuckle

marriage... ;)

Going to be two years older in January and second what Hugh just said. Its hell getting older but its worse taking the other option.

Have been on Celebrex for years (old parachute accident) and ache and creak every morning but damm, its good to be alive!

Jims5543 11-07-2006 12:38 PM

If it makes you guys feel any better. (myself included)

One of my employees that I have known since he was a teen is an avid skateborder.

He would come to work with giant holes in his knees and elbows, all busted up. He also fell off a motorcycle at 90MPH with no gear on and lived to tell about it.

He is now 25 years old and is training and fights in UFC fights. He has broken his foot twice now. He moves slower than me when he gets up from sitting a while. He is all busted up and I warned him he willpay dearly for the abuse his bidy is taking in the long run.

+1 Joe

Its good to be alive.

In honor of all you old farts, I played 2 hours of full-court basketball at lunch today...

...if I don't wake up tomorrow, you all can fight over my stuff.

motion 11-07-2006 12:56 PM

Man, you guys are making me feel really good about being almost 44 :)

Erakad 11-07-2006 01:26 PM

Like my grandfather used to say..."at my age you can't expect to feel good every day." As I recall, he didn'y buy green bananas either.

Moneyguy1 11-07-2006 01:34 PM

What I could once do all night, today I can do once all night.

Charlie Rangel had a good comeback when asked about the 2008 presidential election:

"At my age, I don't even buy green bananas".

Actually, this is not true. Glucosamine is one of the few otc remedies that actually works. It's about as good as daily NSAIDS for minimizing joint inflamation. Can't remember which journal, but I could find it tomorrow.
