What's up with trailer tires?

Time for new tires on my flatbed trailer.

I've always assumed that "For Trailer use Only" meant that the tire did not have the quality for passenger use. In other words, just cheap.

I asked a tire guy today about going to an "LT" rated tire, for light trucks, and he said I should stick with trailer tires.

Anybody here know why? Or have any opinions?

The current tires are old tech bias ply tires. I'm sure they were the trailer manufacturer's low bid. For sure I'll go with radials, but is there a reason to stick with trailer only tires?

Check the Denman Tires web site as they explain triler tires pretty well. Basically they are made different internally, top speed is 65 MPH (for my 5th wheel trailer) and the tread is a different design.

trailer tires have more plies and stiffer sidewalls to handle greater loads.

Buy the best trailer tires you can. My father almost had one of his cheaper tires blow out on his travel trailer this past summer and he replaced them with premium tires... Don't take chances...

Thanks, guys.

I guess I'll go get some new radial trailer tires.

I had a jerk-off at a tire place replace my trailer tire with a "garden" tire. It blew out on the interstate!

Look for the 6-ply tires.

My 1979 dual axle Mallard Camper had old car tires on it when I bought it. When I got new tires last sumer for it, I bought trailer tires. It tows better now, but swayed more with the wind. I bought a real nice hitch and that solved the problem totally.
