Home Theater help

I'm totally perplexed by this problem and hoping someone can help me fix it.

Problem - Can't get Video from VCR onto TV.

I have a Sony 40" LCD with lots of inputs on the back (HDMI, component, composite, etc.)

VCR (Sony also, not that it matters) only has Red/White/Yellow composite terminals.

I have run composite cables from these to the Video IN on the back of my Sony A/V Receiver.

From Video OUT on back of Sony A/V Receiver, I have run composite cables to back of Sony TV, at Video 1.

Receiver is set to Video 1.

I get audio from VCR through stereo. No video on TV, even cycling through all 7(!) input choices for TV.

There is a TV/Video button on the VCR; I switched that to Video to no avail. Toggling it between TV/Video has no effect.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I only want to use the VCR to play back existing tapes - going to use the DVR for new recordings.

I'm thinking its a matter of a single setting, but I'm totally stumped. If I can't solve it, I'll have to bite the bullet and bring someone in, for something like a 30-second fix.

Seems that you are doing nothing wrong .. maybe a bad video (yellow) cable? try swapping one of the audio cables (white or red) for the yellow.

Sounds like the video is not passing through the receiver. You probably have the video input in the wrong spot or the receiver is not on the correct setting. Your receiver may have seperate settings for audio sources and video sources.

is there an s-video cable plugged into the tv? when s-video plugs in it disconnects the composite video on the same input.....same with the reciever.
is there a menu feture on your sony reciever which let's you turn the monitor out on/off?
could also be a bad cable.....

Thanks guys, you've given me things to try and track down.

Jordi- - cables are brand new, but I will try the swap, just in case.

Randy - you've articulated what I was thinking, but darned if I have been able to figure it out. More investigations in my future.

Bell - no S cable being used. Haven't found a menu feature to turn monitor on/off; so far I have only found menu feature to switch inputs to the TV.

I will re-read the manual(s) tonight and see what I find. Its always something...

Randy's comment about the receiver not passing the video signal got me thinking.

Instead of going red/white/yellow from VCR to receiver and then R/W/Y to TV, couldn't I connect red/white from VCR to receiver and connect VCR directly to TV via yellow video cable. That way the video signal is going right to the TV.

Thoughts?

If none of the above works take some pictures of the backs of TV, Receiver, and VCR, and post them. A few dozen extra eyes on the problem won't hurt.

I agree with hooking the VCR up directly to the TV first to make sure everything is working. If that works, then try the AV receiver.

You may need to manually program the input type for each of the seven video inputs. You might need to tell the TV to look at the composite inputs vs the coax or S video input.

yes. try video cable direct from vcr to tv, bypass receiver.

The video should be better straight from the VCR to the TV. Also some receivers have to be connected the same way(all composite or all digital).

Guys--
Thanks for the help. Went home last night and connected the video directly between VCR & TV - VOILA - picture works!
