I think my dog is dying

Big Henry, my 10 year old Airedale, went to get his booster shot for lymes desease on Friday. He was fine on Sat. But come Sunday he was panting endlessly and was very lethargic. He only drank water and he immediatly barfed that up. I cannot get him to eat at all. Today he was more active and his breathing was less labored, but he still won't eat. Today he drank gallons of water but this time he kept it down. I force fed him some rice and boiled ground beef tonight but only got 4 spoonfuls down him before he just refused to eat. He's 105 lbs so if he says no it's no. I don't trust the vet now as I think they may have may a mistake. Could this be a bad reaction to the booster? Any vets on the board?

Don't know what to say.......

I have, over the years, had to say goodbye to a lot of four legged friends and it is never easy. Hope you have better news for us in a few days.

I am not a vet but my Old English Sheepdog died from Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia caused by vaccinations. It is very serious an he will need immediate treatment. Have your vet run a blood test to know for sure. Your dog has the same symptoms mine had. Feel free to pm me.

Thanks Bob. I hope so too. Wrecktech, how long did your dog live after the injection? I have an appointment in the morning but I worried he won't make it through the night.

He lived for 10 days. I send you a site to check out in a pm. He should make it through the night. Annual revaccination is a scam but it make vets hundreds of thousands of $.

That is a good page. He does have an immune deficiency so that would have been triggered by the shot.

I have been reading and hearing more and more that annual vaccinations are not good for animals and that there is a serious backlash movement against them. I certainly know that vets make a lot of $$ off of them, if for no other reason that it gets everyone in the door once a year when they might not have been coming anyways.

I wish you luck, I am a major animal and dog lover and Airedales are one of my favorites.

I'm kinda afraid to take him back there again. They will certainly lie to cover for the error. This is the same vet that castrated my other Airedale because she "thought" he had a tumor that turned out to just be an infection later. There is a vet that lives across the way from me. I will go knock on her door in the morning and see if she can help the old boy. The wife is beside herself right now and we both feel so damn helpless to comfort him.

He's one sweet-looking cinnamon bun, targa. I love Airedales, also.
I hope he pulls through.
***** man, I'd be over there 'a knockin' on the vets door.
.
What Denis said!!!
My g/f is a doc, lifetime dog person, and she's not big on vets.
Well, mostly about all the chemicals they push.
Also, she's against average dog food - feeds only raw food from places that don't use chemicals.
Oh, and organic treats, etc.
.
My ex-vet prescribed Rimadyl (Carprofen) for my Augie dog - damned near killed him.
I saw that blank stare, the look of death, in his eyes.
Checked online and saw the raw hungry truth about Pfizer's Rimadyl.
I could have killed her - the vet.
.
Anyway, we all feel your concern and pray that Big Henry will be OK.
Good luck.
.
BTW, would either one of you gents post that page/link, please? Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your dog. Are there any 24 hr emergency pet vets around? Hope your dog gets better soon.

Dave

I wish both of you the very best - pets are family.

If you don't feel right about waiting, don't! No matter how this turns out you have to live with it. Do what you think needs to be done, that's probably the correct thing.

Pulling for you both,
Jim

The nearest 24 hr place is in Youngstown Ohio, 45 minutes away and a pretty dangerous town after dark. I have had bad experiences with those places too. One in FL wanted charge me $1400.00 for my cats bladder infection. When I told them to euthenize him as he was a stray that I took in, they fixed him for $200.00. I know I gambled with Willie's life, but it paid off, and I got to seee what they were really about. Bandits. I just got him to eat a half of a piece of bread. So much hope on so little sustinance.

I will say a prayer for your best friend tonight. If I can be of any more help please feel free to ask. Below is the link to info on vaccinations. If he is suffering from IMT what will happen is his blood is losing its ability to carry oxygen to his body and specifically his organs. One plus I think is that Airedales are not predisposed to IMT.
