Slot Cars Tracks
I bought my son a small NASCAR slot car set up for x-mas. I have to admit it's really cool. The cars come apart and they have tune up kits, etc. I'm all new to the slot car thing. I looked around and saw Porsche slot cars. I was curious if anyone out there put together a good size track with P-cars? Let see the pics!

I don't have pics but in the 1/32 scale there are lots of great-looking Porsche slot cars from Fly, Ninco, Scalextric, etc. 917, 904, 911, 935, 356, etc.

Yeah I see that. I guess I was wondering what scale is a good scale and track layouts. Cause I'm thinking I might do something big in the basement.

Just remember, the bigger the layout, the farther you gotta run when you end up off the track!

Get a 1/24 track and drive both 1/32 and 1/24 scale cars on it. I run a Carrera track that is just over 29 feet total. No pics right now the track is not set up.
This shop has great prices and service: http://www.fantasyworldhobbies.com/ Check out the gallery of tracks and cars: http://www.fantasyworldhobbies.com/GalleryLink.html

I've only ever had HO and 1/32. If starting from scratch, I'd do 1/24 for the reason B D mentioned.
One neat thing to do is attach static plastic models to slot car chassis, this gives you a much wider selection of cars. You could organize a league of Baja Bugs, Citroen 2CVs, Batmobiles, whatever you want. The selection in static models is much better in 1/24 than in 1/32. Also, down the line I think it would be neat to race small-scale RC cars. Take the real racing line, swap paint, no more retrieving deslotted cars, and quck-changing batteries would be like pitting for fuel. I'm not sure if the RC cars down at 1/32 and similar scales are performant enough just yet, but they will be. When they are, the extra width of 1/24 track would be nice. I had to pack up my 1/32 track when we moved, but I'm holding on to it. When/if I ever get back into slot cars, I'm going to make my own track. You cut the slots using a router on MDF board and glue down copper tape for the power rails. This would allow all sorts of interesting curves and elevation changes. You could make Laguna Seca's corkscrew, etc. In 1999 I visited Spain, which is slot car mecca. My long-suffering wife allowed me to spend a couple precious evenings in Madrid hunting down the local slot car tracks. The locals are rally-crazy, and they run really interesting rally-type slot cars. Four wheel drive using belts, coil spring suspension at all four corners, run on bumpy tracks. I've never seen those cars in the US, nor even any mention of them in the US slot car magazine(s) or websites.

wcc,
Have you been to Sportcraft in Laingsburg? They have a ton of slot cars, big and small. PLUS, the owner is a Porsche guy. Mark has an early 70's 911 he has had since new. He has it in the back of the store. If he is there, ask him to see it. It is original with a cool patina. www.sportcraftcars.com is his website.

Routing a track is pretty easy, 1/8 carbide bit. Lay it with copper tape and wire
![]() Take a look at this site http://www.oldslotracer.com/, lots of routed tracks, even Porsche content.

thanks... I though of making my own track also, but I found that the race sets were alot cheaper for what I wanted, plus the kit I bought included a pit lane track piece that talks to a pc to count lap times and speed.

Although I don't have a circuit laid-out out at the moment, here is a selection of some of the slot cars I have sitting on the shelf over my fire place...
A ProSlot 911 GT2 A Fly 917K from Monza 1000kms 1971 and a Fly 908 from Nurburgring 1969 Up there too is a 911 GT1 in the 'splatter' type Mobil ! livery, and another 908 from Jarma 1970 in 'GESIPA' sponsorship. There are a whole lot more upstairs but I don't have any means of photographing them right now.
