1980 Rabbit Diesel. Slow. AM radio with one speaker. Hot air always came out the vents, even in summer.

Just read in Hemmings Sports and Exoitc Car that Fiat will bring back the 500 in late 2007. One of the varients may be a 1.4-liter, 120hp turbo engine...in a 500

A 1949 Packard hearse, which my father picked up when I was 15 for $250.00 over in Charlotte. Lot's of fun. For a while, I had "access" to a 1959 Fiat 1300 Spyder. He took it in trade for a TV at his appliance store. Man, did that thing smoke.

Joe thanks for the pics ..... after the 500 I 'upgraded' to a 600 to later become an 850 Abarth, not as radical as this one

but really scary-fun to drive, 847cc and almost 70hp, some friends at the time where lucky enough to get the 1000 Abarth; 982cc and 112hp at 8200rpm

High School graduation present in 1974 was a 2 door, baby blue, '64 Ford Galaxie 500 that my dad owned for 9 years. It sat in the garage for a couple years with a bad trans waiting for me. The good ol' dependable 289 wasn't enough to move that land yacht very quickly and that probably saved me a few tickets.

It was also the only car I ever totaled....

I had a Rambler American, a gift from my Aunt. It was also the first car I ever worked on, instructed by my very Tomboyish handyman, Hazel. 3 Speed, on the column.

Found this page on them. Amazing they got 35 mpg with a 6cyl in late 50's

I remember drag racing (if you can call it that) with an old Corvair down foothill blvd near San Dimas with 2 friends in the car. The lack of speed in the race had us laughing for hours after ;-)

This is going to be painful but... first car was Dad's purchased-new '55 Chevy two door hardtop. I rebuilt the front suspension - A frames bushings, ball joints, tie rod ends, and replaced the shocks, universal joints, tuneup, etc on my $1.90/hr Sears paint department job. THEN is an act indicating I was to be a future rocket scientist...I gave it back to him so I could buy a '66 Chevy (gulp!) VAN. Yes, I was THAT stupid! Built it out nicely; it was captured in some side shots at a
van "run" in the Aug or Sept '74 HotRod.

EPILOGUE: My Dad sold that car for $450 (!!!!) a month or two later. I have been kicking myself since I was about 19 or 20. Gawd, it still hurts to remember.

My first car was a 1962 VW Beetle with 1200cc and 40hp - bought it from my mother in 1977 when it was still original.

By the time I sold it in 1983 only the shell and left door were original - man I had some fun learning how a car works and how to make it handle.

By the time I finished it looked like this.
