You said it, sad but true. Maybe it's not people I dislike so much as it is where they have to live (modern times). It all sucks.

![]() Milt...I do remember discussing with teachers the best deer & elk rifle calibers. The rural are grade school I went to, (1950's) 7th grade & up students brought shotguns to school during pheasant hunting season. We'd hunt the fencerows on our way home. Not all "progress" is good...not by a long shot.

We also brought guns to school, then went shooting afterwards. First joint I ever smoked was in the HS parking lot. Got caught and warned "dont be smoking that crap here again" and after another couple of years never touched it again.
On and on it goes and progress sucks. We have been taken over by "do gooders" who feel that they need to make the world a safe place, when its never going to be totally safe. Everyone needs to be responsible themselves, not have the world made safe by the govt...

Generation "Y" really is full of a bunch of mindless pussies because of this as well.
My generation too (GEN-X) but less-so, since most of us were actually disciplined, and were held responsible for our actions. Heck, from the age of 8, I had to work to buy my own school clothes, and bought my first truck with ALL my own money. But, I grew up in the country. Can't get in a fist fight these days without someone threatening to press charges. (just a guess wink-wink) I dated several school teachers, and I really think they are to blame. Well, at least those that make policy for them. My ex was pretty sharp, but had a few messed up ideals IMO. I wish all teachers were more like my Junior High gym teacher. An ex-marine combat vet. He ran things like it was still the 50's, and we all respected him for it. I remember being thrilled when he pointed at me during gym class and said "now that's a push-up". He didn't give compliments, so I still remember that to this day. Do kids even do push-ups in gym class anymore? I remember thinking kids my age at that time were "soft-boned twinkie eating video game junkies". Today's crop is even worse. Same problem, but add 50 pounds on average, and take away any sense of responsiblity, and respect for authority. Not to mention manners.

We need more like him in the system now, and less lawyers and politically correct admins. Oh yes, and less "good behavour through medication" as is the norm today in schools. Manners? That has gone out of the window. I remember when a gentleman took his hat off when he went in a building. He would not even think of eating a meal with a hat on, but these days kids must put their baseball cap on when they get out of bed and wear it all day long. Would not doubt that they even keep it on during sex! One of my copilots a while back insisted on wearing his baseball cap during dinner in a very nice restaurant. The flight attendents and I went to another table and continued dinner without him. He got the message and took the cap off the next time we all ate together, but who is teaching these kids manners? No one that many of us can see.

Have you seen these new play areas in the malls now?
Well padded floors with deats all around and an area for the little tykes to run around. We were in one over the weekend and my son and another boy got in a bit of a shoving match over sitting in the car. I watched as they "worked out the problem" and then I noticed the mom moving in. In actuality the other kid was the one being fresh but I did not care it couls have easily been mine. I was more interested how each one would work it out. Not a chance, the other kids mom ran over, which meant I had to walk over, and she pulled he kid from the car and put him in time out for upsetting my son. Who was over it in 1.2 seconds. I said something to the mom along the lines of its fine they were working it out and I got a unacceptable behaviour or something or other remark. She put her kid in "time out" for 10 minutes and then made him go over to my son and apologize. I walked over to her when we were leavign and told her I appreciated what she was trying to accomplish but kids are kids and they were working it out. I also assured her I was not upset with her son and that he was just being a boy. She appreciated me not passing judgement but said that most parents are all fussy over stuff like that. One of the many reasons I hate the mall.

During the 1st week of school he had SS after Gym and they had run a couple of miles. My son decided it was a good idea to put his head on his desk in this class. Mr Cane walked right up to him, got 2 inches from his face and gave him the business, telling him it would be a long year if he thinks thats they was he is going to sit in class etc... I thanked him at the open house and told him to be sure and let me know if there were any other problems. He seemed suprised that I thanked him. My son and Mr. Cane got along perfectly for the entire year. He got straight B's in the class and tried really hard in it too.

My other favorite was my senior english teacher. He was a self-professed liberal and the department head. He had a very laisez-faire attitude in class. Thing was, he would let students know where the lines were and in no-uncertain terms that they were not to be crossed. Underneath his calm, cool exterior was a real hard-ass. I liked and respected him. Even the trouble makers never gave him a hard time.

I believe children are better off with firm boundaries and consistent responses. My daughter is well aware of actions/consequences, responsibility and proper manners. She may not do it right all the time but she is only 4. I think with her peers she is in the minority.
My favorite line came from a friends now ex-wife, "Why would I ever say 'no' to my child?" That still cracks me up.

We most likely have attorneys to blame for these things. I choose to blame attorneys for pretty much everything wrong with our society these days

My mother was more in the opposite direction. I think her motto was "Why would I ever say 'yes' to my child?" I recall being screamed at to do my own laundry one week, and being berated for touching my mother's precious washing machine the next...

Such nonsense, none are true, but it is sad to think some of you think they are.
We did not have corporal punishment in 1973. I was a teacher then. We strove to stop fights and yes, both of them usually got expelled, if need be. "Middle School Counselor calls Planned Parenthood, who notifies the ACLU. " complete drivel.

Little Sonic, not wanting to go visit Grandma...grabs on to the leg of the table and will not let go despite being pulled on by his mother and father.
1973 - Little Sonic is allowed to stay home but his allowance is cut. Sonic learns the value of earning his money and grows up to be a successful businessman. 2006 - Little Sonic is sent to the family doctor who diagnoses him as having ADHD. Sonic is placed on heavy doses of Ritalin and other anti-depressants by his parents who wish to turn the little boy off so that he does not bother them and their busy lives. Sonic on drugs is turned into a walking little vegetable and develops the inability to display effective emotion or constructive reaction to the world around him. He grows up to develop a chemical dependancy on harder drugs such as cocaine and heroin...and wanders the streets homeless, in and out of shelters and jail. |
