Tim - any info on the plane?

MFAFF 12-07-2006 10:25 AM

Its an ex Swiss Air Force Venom......FB MK5 from memory.

A few are pole mounted (!) in Switzerland outside air fields and garages as adverts...

My first two cars were station wagons, a 1968 Opel Kadet and then a 1964 mercury Comet. Not only are they good for hauling stuff they are great for car camping, throw down the back seat and you have an instant secure bed insulated from the weather/bug/critters and keep all your food and clothing safe in the front seat, no hassle of setting up a tent and if things get ugly you climb into the front seat and drive away with all your belongings.

I love me a european station wagon. Volvo, BMW, Mercedes, maybe a VW.

Japanese or American, not so much.

You still see 15-20 year old eurowagons around and they look timeless. That dreadful Olds posted....egad.

The track where that photo is taken is at a small former military airstrip in Ticino. Coincidentally we did a lot of Porsche Club DE events at that track when I lived in Zurich. It roughly half-way between St.Gotthard and the Italian border on your left hand side when you are heading south.

The plane is mounted at an angle in front of the airstrip.

Luckily my wife and two daughters agree!

Tim, you live in NW Ohio and probably have plenty of room for three cars! (I went to U Toledo for grad school and lived there for three years, so I'm familiar with the area.)

I now have a long narrow driveway and a one-car garage. The more cars I have, the harder it is to get to the 911!

I need something that hauls stuff (racing wheels and tires, for example), is reliable as hell (I don't want wifey to get stranded somewhere), is good in the snow (I live up a hill), is somewhat luxurious (heated seats, please, I'm getting old), gets decent gas mileage (no SUVs need apply), but isn't boring to drive.

That's why we have the RSX-S. It does everything well, although isn't outstanding in any respect.

Coincidently, I stumbled over these two pictures on the web.

No, it's a Vampire. By DeHaviland if memory serves.

Yes:

Or Venom as someone else observed. :D They're quite a bit alike.

Buick?

fastpat 12-07-2006 12:41 PM

How about the Pontiac Safari marketed contemporaneously with the Chevy Nomad.

Those aren't holes, they're Cruiserline Ventiports.

Other than a '55-'57 Chevy Nomad, this is the best looking station wagon ever in my opinion. There are other honorable mentions along the way, but one of these still turns my head:

by the way, I'm not affliaited with this car. It is currently on CollectorCarTraderOnline.com for $16,999! There's a P1800S on there for $50K!!!! Holy Moley!

"Ohh, these are speed holes. They make the car go faster"

I use some of the thousands of old 78rpm records my father had, they break apart really well.

MFAFF 12-08-2006 01:09 AM

Now we're talking shooting brakes.....http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1165572468.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1165572509.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1165572532.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1165572568.jpg

+1. Always liked the P1800, especially the ES version.
