Eewwwwww, a little gear up landing, a 7.9 million dollar mistake

Whatever happened to "Roger, gear down and locked confirmed, tower"?

You should be celebrating. One less instrument of US imperial aggression, right?

I'd celebrate if that aircraft were sold, to a private party, for full price. Since both you and I will be getting the bill for that mistake, it's hardly something to applaud.

You're not a very deep thinker, are you?

Diego Garcia...water around and within is incredible.

PIC is responsible for the gear...tower, at least in the Navy, is not in the checklist.

Great series of pics...my bet is that the career of the pilot suffered more damage than the Lancer

If it makes you sleep better in your bunker, you can believe that.

Yes, that's true, but in the Air Force and the Army, the landing phraseology from tower to pilot and then pilot to tower is, "Skip57, cleared to land, verifiy gear down and locked", the response is "Roger, Cleared to land, gear down and locked", or when flying a skid equipped helicopter it's gear down and welded, well, that last is a running joke.

As far as careers go, the pilot's is over, and if the controller didn't use correct phraseology, so is his.

Pat, Just a question....do you EVER come out of the deep water? Ever "wade in the shallows" so to speak?

To follow the metaphor, the deep is good exercise but your feet are supposed to occasionally touch the bottom.

OK how does a pilot forget to put the gear down? Isn't there at least a checklist? A co-pilot? a flight engineer?

You are thinking B-1A, killed by Carter; B-1B raised by Reagan.

Come out of the deep ? He still is on the bottom, hiding from the govt agents who are looking for him.

After spending 11 hours on a combat flight like these guys did, things happen. Its called an accident for a reason and there is a lot more to this story. Not sure that its supposed to be out in the public so this is all I will say about it.

In aviation, the story is almost never as simple as it first seems. Accidents are almost always a result of a series of small errors compounding upon one another so that, in the end, the final straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak, is often a small error that in and of itself would not have caused the acident.
