From the L.A. Daily News (12/24) page 3:

Two officers fight for lives after shooting

Police search for driver who fired during stop

by Tomio Geron
Staff Writer

Long Beach -- Just days before Christmas, two Long Beach police officers shot during a routine traffic stop were fighting for their lives while the search continued Saturday for the shooter, police officials said.

Long Beach police identified the officers as Roy Wade Jr., 39, who graduated from the Police Academy three weeks ago, and Abe Yap, 37, a nine-year veteran of the force. Wade was training with Yap when they were shot through the front windshield of their patrol car during a traffic stop on Friday.

Wade sustained four gunshot wounds to his upper chest and neck area above his bulletproof vest, Police Chief Anthony Batts said Saturday at a news conference. Yap was shot once in the cheek area, Batts said.

Able to Write

Both were in critical condition, Batts said. But Yap was able to write notes, he added.

Although police located the suspected shooter's vehicle late Friday, the suspect was not found during a search of an adjacent apartment complex.

Police maintained a command post near the site throughout the day Saturday, and portions of downtown Long Beach remained closed to traffic.

The shooting erupted at 1:20 p.m. Friday, as residents were shopping at a nearby Wal-Mart and waiting for the Metro Blue Line at a platform on Long Beach Boulevard and Sixth Street.

Wade and Yap had pulled over a white 1998 Nissan Pathfinder, Batts said.

After the officers flashed their lights, the shooter got out of his car and opened fire at the officers, who were still in their car, Batts said.

The officers were unable to return fire, Batts said.

The getaway

The shooter fled south on Long Beach Boulevard to Broadway, where other Long Beach police officers were in a squad car driving toward him.

The shooter fired at the officers, and they returned fire before he got away, Batts said.

Police described the suspect as a Latino or Filipino man in his late 20s or early 30s, 5 feet 7 to 5 feet 9 inches tall and 210 to 230 pounds. He was also described as having short hair or a shaved head with tattoos on both arms.

The suspect's sport utility vehicle was found "riddled with gunshots" about 7 p.m. Friday, Batts said.

Evidence was discovered in the vehicle, but Batts would not elaborate on what it was.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call (562) 435-6711.

Yep, that Wally mart is doing wonders for that part of town. . . Charming little area over there.

I don't think its the Walmart, its the part of town. Any successful retail establishment there would probably increase the number of people concentrated in one area and if there are already violence issues in the neighborhood then they'll eventually spill over in the establishment's store or parking lot. Blaming Walmart for THAT doesn't make a lot of sense.

We've got Walmarts in Monrovia, Anaheim, etc..other middle class and upper middle class neighborhoods and I doubt they are a magnet for violence just because they're a Walmart; as opposed to some other brand of store.

Granted that part of town is a dump, but it still cracks me up that the Wally mart was allowed in there as part of a "revitalization effort".

LB would be that way even if that Wallyworld wasn't there...27 years ago I had a neighbor that was working in a 711 store on the edge of N LB and got shot twice by one of the natives. He was lucky he didn't die.

Snoop Dog is an ex N LB Cripp...then he moved on outa the hood and moved to Claremont, CA right next to the power poles. The Claremont PD used to watch him go down Indian Hill Blvd in one of his homeys Cadaliacs on his way to score some dope in Pomona..can take the boy outa da hood but but U caint take the hood outa de boy. He also bought another house out in Rancho Cucamonga (out by the JC) One night Snoop was havin a PARTay at his Claremont house and every car parked out front was registered to Death Row Records...soon after that every house on that culdesac was up for sale. Snoop U da man...

Yes they did.

Actually (another Long Beach tidbit) there's now a referendum measure slated to take the recent city ban on "super centers" to the voters.

Wally mart wants to bring their super center grocery stores to LBC and the city (wisely, IMO) told 'em "no" and passed a law making it illegal for stores with more than such-and-such percentage of the square footage of groceries that had a total square footage greater than such-and-such to pull permits. Basically it locks out the supercenters. A consortium backed by Wally mart recently collected signatures for a referendum ballot, which has been certified, so it looks like we're in for a fight on that one.

Granted Vons and Ralphs (both of which I can't stand either) have a big stake in this - perhaps more so than the average grocery-buyer, but it's still bad for the remaining neighborhood local mom&pop grocery places (and yes, we have several - and not just ethnic ones either).

I'm fighting it. In general, if it's good for Walmart, it's bad for the community pretty much by default, even if that sounds counter-intuitive (since you're taking a position AGAINST competition on the surface). . .

North L.B. is a schithole. If it all got nuked tomorrow there's be little loss to the world, IMO. I hate going up there. Sorry if that's "snobbish".

Why is getting a successful retailer to come to a blighted (I assume?) neighborhood funny or ironic? The idea is to get something going. Isn't that trying to use capitalism for the "betterment" of the area?

I'm really not trying to belittle your opinion I'm just saying any busines that goes into a troubled area is going to get its share of trouble. You've got to put a business in that will succeed. For example putting a Steinway piano showroom in Compton probably isn't going to sell enough pianos to make a go of it. That's not a racial comment at all; it wouldn't work in a poor area in a white, hispanic or Asian neighborhood either. But it'll STILL get its share of violance in its parking lot!

Sounds like this area needs better policing, better education, an influx of jobs, improved infrastructure, etc. A whole host of things. A Walmart by itself isn't going to do a damn thing....except make money for Walmart which is why they'd go in there in the first place.

MOnrovia Middle Class...only above Foothill...below the 215 it gets dark early...there are parts of Duarte that the LA Sheriffs Dept didn't go into...

Pomona, Fontana, Rialto and San Bernardino...are all places that one fears to tread..Once was talkin to a San Berdoo PD, he said if the residents knew the murder rate in SB, they wouldn't come outa their houses and if they did they would be packin iron.

I always felt San Berdoo had the same feeling as Detroit...

I used to be a brave mtherfker and take my RR into Muscovoy (W side San Berdoo) to a Rib Joint on Basline Rd...

As bad as you think Long Beach is today it was much much worse thirty years ago before they went development crazy.

Still kicking myself for not going into debt buying one or more of those condos in that first tower that went up on Ocean... I think they were going for $70K

Hey you still got those ones in San Pedro that are going "from the $300s" (two months ago, I'm pretty sure the sign said "from the high $300s" and two months before that I think it said "from the $400s"). Hang in there.

Long Beach Tower? The one in "Gone in 60 Seconds"? That one's about a half mile from my place and is one of the smaller, more boring-looking condo development units now. Personally I think the guy developing the Aqua and whatever that other one is down from it's gonna' lose his shirt, if he hasn't already but that's just me. There's plenty of stuff coming on the market just in time for the RE market to go "boom". Prime pickin'.

Although there's gonna' be the stage set for one helluva class war over the next few decades - all the yuppie types in the half-million $$$ condos and multi-$$$ houses along the waterfront over towards Naples and the ghetto rats living 20-to-a-shack living 6 or 7 blocks north. Should make for interesting times.
