anybody ever remodel a bathroom when you only have one Bathroom?

this is my quandry...i have the $$, i have the time, and i certianly have the enthusiasm. i also have some handy friends. i am not planning on moving any components, so the stuff will stay where it is. it is a big bathroom with a separate shower stall and a tub. i dont know if i could survive 2 weeks of running to the gym to shower and drop the kiddies. but i really want to bring my BR into this century.

teak floor, tile surround-drop in jacuzzi tub, multiple shower heads in the stall, cool lighting....stuff like that.

Rent a porta-john to take care of business and deal with the shower at the gym or a hotel.

I'm laughing here. We did just that about four years ago. I was taking bird baths in the tub every morning with a pipe sticking out of the wall. We had to reseat the toilet every night when we were done doing the construction for the day. You know its bad when you are running a wheel barrel through your house while you are still living there. :O
First thing; recruit some good help!

Good luck with your project.

I did it several years ago. I planned it in stages so that we only had to live w/out the toilet for 1/2 day, the shower for two days. The sink didn't matter at all as we used the kitchen.

Of course laying the new subfloor had to be done piecemeal which made tiling a little tricky.

It'll take longer than two weeks.

We were lucky, we built the new bathroom and didn't demo the old bathroom until the new one was done. We tore the old bathroom out and "added" the space to my daughter's bedroom. Bathrooms and kitchens always take longer than you think they will!!

+100

I did my kitchen - EVERYTHING - entirely myself about 4 yers ago. It kicked my butt.

I am getting ready to take on my bathroom and I am going to the studs, taking out the 75 year old cracked tile floor on raised foundation which means I'll be seeing the dirt below in there for awhile. Fortunately I have a tub in the upstairs converted attic bathroom so I'll be "showering" with one of those rubber hose things stuck on the end of the tub spout. My condolences on your circumstances.

CAREFUL planning will shorten up your down time but..........it's gonna be a challenge at best!

How close is the nearest hotel from your house?

Porta-potti sounds like a workable idea. Brush teeth, etc in kitchen. Spit baths ditto. Wear lots of cologne.

1) Work around the toilet. Reset it on the bare subfloor if you have to, and you will only be without it for a day with the final tiling.
2) same with shower. Even if you rip out the walls, leave the tub/pan in place, and drape heavy plastic on the walls so you can still shower.

Do it in the summer so you can shower in the backyard using a garden hose.

We did it this last summer. It was tough. There were times when I wished that we had put in a second bathroom first. But we made it. The bathroom looked much better now.

BTDT almost 2 years ago.

Rigged up a shower in the basement and used that for a month. Worked fine for the wife kid & I, the baby bathed on the sink. Also had a toilet in the basement that had to suffice for the first week. Wasn't glamourous, but the finished product was very nice and was only short term.

Hardest part was getting aa damned 350# cast iron tub up the stairs. All in all took about a month with me and the contractor doing the bulk of the work the first week.

Finish:
