Apocalypto

Saw this tonight. Didn't want to, as the reviews described it as basically a gore-fest. But a friend wanted to see it, so whatever. In a nutshell, I'd say wait until it's on DVD if you see it at all. The big screen didn't help much, as I was hoping it might. The gore was definitely there, but that didn't really bother me. The insane cruelty did, and it was painful to watch. I suppose it's worthwhile to get a feel for how horrible humans can be; it just sucks to feel it.

The story line is over-the-top and unrealistic. Mel Gibson was obviously trying for something epic, but fell short IMO. Can't fault him for trying; not many have the guts to go against the grain for their art, and I commend him. I was hoping for better cinematography, and was disappointed. There was, I suppose, a good feel for Mayan Indian tribal life and culture, and that was worthwhile. The Mayan city was decent. The folks at the top of the altar were interesting.

There was a decent survival storyline revolving around the central character, Jaguar Paw. That part, although unrealistic, was entertaining.

I tried not to spoil the movie here. Just giving my impression. The movie is worthwhile, IMO, but tough to take for what you get.

Hell, I plan to see it just to reward someone for making something original and not a remake of an old movie or tv show.

The movie is a parable about the US government and the citizens that support it.

You'll notice this is a separate Apocalypto thread from yours, Pat.

That's how Gibson describes his movie, though he uses civilization in other descriptions.

Like "Miami Vice"..............except for the brief boob shot, pretty much a waste.

Not a lot to rent on DVD, perhaps I should scrap the H.T..

I will never see another remake or sequel. I think SWAT was the last one I saw in a theater and have not even watched any on dvd or cable. I refuse! Make something original and I might plop down $6 for a matinee.

I'm going to see it just because I've been a Gibson fan since the Road Warrior.

I saw The Good Shepherd last night. Great flick.

Mel Gibson lost me when he spewed anti-Semetic hate. Never another dollar from my pocket into his. I will never see this movie or anything else he prodcces or stars in. That's the only way to make it known to him that its unacceptable.

That makes sense if you just can't stand to spend your money on his stuff. But if you think you're ever gonna make a dent in his paycheck, you're crazier than he was when he was drunk. I'm sure a well-written letter to him would have a lot more impact on him and you may just get a response. I'd bet he's that kind of guy.

You assume I'm the only one who's going to act that way. I am not. I'm also not willing to spend my time to write him a letter, nor am I so self centered to think he will actually reply.

As far as what kind of guy he is, he made that perfectly clear when he climbed into his car drunk off his ass, with an open bottle of tequila.

And I'm not crazy, but I was drunk last night, and didn't make any racial or religeous slurs. You know why? Because I'm not a racist or anti-semite when I'm sober.

Lighten up, Francis. I'm not defending his personal behavior, but I doubt you've never said or done something stupid while drunk. I've done some apologizing over the years for stuff I said and did while sober and rational.

If Mel's latest movie is a total bomb and he loses every penny he's sunk into it (he won't), he's still got nine figures in the bank. He ain't making movies anymore to get rich. Unlike Michael Richards, Mel has had a very long and diverse career. Sort of like Johnny Depp, Mel can afford to make whatever kinds of movies he feels like, just for kicks, just for the challenge. And if they make money, so much the better.

Actually I'm a happy drunk, so I never have to apologize.

I'm sort of new to this BBS, and I've been wondering why people don't like you, why they give you funny names (fastpaste, etc.), flame you all the time. Now I know first hand.
