remember back when you were a summer intern?

when i had that job title, i knew i was basically the lowest on the totem pole. in civil eng, you basically do the crap work that involves some type of shoveling of samples. well, for the past two summers we had to babysit this one kid in college. this guy was a jackass. you ask him to do something, and he would do it halfarse, or not at all. i asked him what he wanted to do after college, and he responded with, "anything else besides this schitty job." (he didnt realize it was a slam to us) well, the second summer, we gave him more math stuff. stuff like figuring out how much cut and fill we would need. the idiot would give me the answer written on a post it. no backup calcs. he ask a question, and you tell him the answer and he would say, "oh yea, i knew that.". well, we reviewed his job performance accordingly. six of us on the team painted a very clear picture of this kid....turns out that his uncle knows my boss, he will be #7 on our team next week. he got hired (on a consultant basis). on the bright side, i will never have to do any of the dirty work again. he walks thru the door i am handing him a shovel and all the nightwork.

We've had really good, really bad, and 1 or 2 in between. The real crappy thing is when the intern worked somewhere else in the company and the other dept didn't put "do not rehire" on their evaluation. We inherited one of those. Why are some people so afraid of offending someone?

...but I know what you mean. There was a guy who interned with me at the company that I ended up at after college. He was this loud mouth kid who was from the same college as me. He talked a good talk...but I don't think he ever did anything. I think the department he was working in caught on early and just baby sat him instead of relying on him for any work. He would have been the lone engineering intern that summer, but I knocked on the door of the interview room, sans an appointment and offered my resume. Got the internship and later a nice job offer with the company 3 months before I graduated.


...Like in your case Cliff, those slack asses come back! There are some in my firm now! I've come to accept that the engineering talent pool is very shallow.

Ah, interns. I have had them and have been one...MBA interns and they were all good.

I was one of the good ones. I was given a management award (and $$$) after 3 months. I was put incharge of the "others" and there were some doosies. Like the guy who was spent most of his time trying to figure out how to order musical equipment for his band, and charge the company, then skip.

Or the guy that would throw up if you gave him too much work.

Or the Korean guy (Dung Lam!) who didn't have enough space on the hard-disk for his computer and deleted the windows sub-dir. "Mr. Tomlinson, my computer isn't working."

I'd say it's 50/50 and the ratio from about is about right (1 good, 2 OK, 1 bad).

Just brought on an intern - this guy I hand picked from one of my classes. He is a great kid and pretty darn bright. I hope this works out - if his project works it will mean another bump of 10% in overall sales. Pure justification to bring him on board full time at some point. He does require direction though smart, he lacks the field savvy that only comes with bruises and grey whiskers.
