And its not a hassle to ship and such as its blackpower. Shot it for many years and its a lot of fun.
That is a Hawken replica mountain rifle. First made in .45 and .50 calibers, its a very nice shooting gun. Tabs, what is that, a .50, 54 or what?

Did you finish the barrel or did it come that finished? Looking at browning one I saw recently.

How long did it take you? Week or so to work up? A lot would depend on how finished the stock was on delivery.
Looks nice. Let us know how it shoots.

I build a Thompson/Center .50 Cal Hawken many years ago. The stock was fully inletted but just roughly machine finished. Spent many hours with rasps to shape it then many more sanding. The barrel was again rough machine finished and required a lot of draw filing to smooth it enough to brown it. All brass was right out of the mold, again a lot of filing to fit then polishing.
Gun turned out great is a lot of fun to shoot but I spent many many hours working on it. Also build a .45 cal flintlock pistol. Just lightly sanded the stock before finishing, browned the barrel, polished the brass and it was done. Probably didn't spend 4 hours total on it.. Kits used to be all over the place as to the level of work required to finish them.

My uncle has a really nice Pennsylvania long rifle replica. It has the dual trigger and all, really nice piece. Not sure who made it, but i sure would love to have one myself. The P/KLR is the original sniper rifle.

Where is Jeff higgins when U need him...
Muzzleloaders are alot of fun to shoot. The recoil is more of push than a jolt. Its a slow ritualistic process to reload the gun, you might shoot 25 rounds in an afternoon. Its relaxing, U talk to people, people are always interested in what your shooting. Accuracy is just as good in a ML as a Centerfire rifle. There are 2 main types of weapons Military and commercial. Generally the Military guns are going to be in the larger calibers, while the hunting/target types are going to be smaller. I shoot orginal as well as replicas.

I haven't shot my muzzleloaders in years but seems I read somewhere that many shooters no longer use black powder. There is some kind of substitute powder available which doesn't foul the bores as much as black powder ??
Comments from you experts ??

Black Powder is very corrosive and guns using it need to be cleaned and oiled thourghly. I have not followed the newer advancements in Powder technology. I would be more apt to use the substitute in an orginal gun than a replica.

I could cut and paste but am not Slopat, so read this link about the new substitute powders.
http://www.gunnersden.com/blackpowder/index.htm.blackpowder-substitutes.html Personally I always hated all the hassle of cleaning black powder guns. A revolver really needed to be totally taken apart, while a rifle like Tabs needed a bath in hot water and good scrubbing to get it off. The new powder eliminates this to a large extent. You still need to clean it but not as extensive. Tabs is correct on the kick on the long rifles. I used to have a .50 Hawken copy (would give my right nut for a real Hawken) and then moved up to a .54 Sharon but have not shot anything in years. Black powder just sorta pushes the ball out of the barrel. Drop over long range is noticeable but these weapons are still very accurate when shot correctly. A lot of fun to shoot and well worth trying.

id10t has it.... THAT is a kit gun! I enjoyed building my first AR15 from a stripped lower and parts kit. Not too much of a challenge.
I have a front stuffer, and found it fun to shoot, but the particular one I have tends to bruise my cheek due to the shape of the buttstock. I still use ye olde black powder, tho... but in cartridge form! I have a replica 1874 Sharps that is just fun to shoot with black powder cartridges and cast bullets (I cast my own, and lube with my own concoction!). I actually find that cleaning after shooting is MUCH easier and quicker than modern cartridge guns: just run a couple patches soaked with alchohol down the bore, then a couple clean patches. DONE! Sometime soon, I have to get off my ass and cast some bullets and go lob some lead with that ol' smokepole. Problem is... the rifle is damn near 5 feet long... and I just bought a Boxster... not really anywhere to transport that biga$$ gun!
