Dude! You know your thread, very impressive. You knew right where to find this info.

Hat's off to Derek!

Arizona 911 01-16-2011 05:17 PM

Would it be possible to get a copy of that article?

Had a gig in Santa Monica tonight.
Coming home... 405 North... Mulholland is my preference to the 101 across the Valley.
Late at night... and without incrimination...
Beautiful LA/Valley skyline far below, with only the deafening bellows of my open flat-six screaming "MORE!"
Windows down, sunroof open to an ironically dark sky, heat exchangers a comfort to the cold wonders.
Go wide.
Throw it out.
Heel-toe a thousand times.
Go straight.
Brights on.
Senses pulsing, yet...
Calm.
Relaxed.

Above the city.

Free.

It's something you have to experience to understand. Those who say Mulholland is dead... Mulholland is so passe... so wrong. It is not quantifiable by even pavement, or how many turns there are, or how "safe" it is.
The freedom is tangible.
It's still there.
For a while tonight, I felt alive!

OK, this was from a long time ago, but it's beautiful. Nicely done Derek.

You can hear from Derek's words...he understands, he lives, the spirit of Mul.

Only a few really get it. But for those few comrades that do, the applause is endless. ;)

Banning, Thanks for your post. I don't know if the v8 worked well or not. It was just a picture in a magazine. The article was more about Mulholland than any one car. That one just sticks in my head because it was a 911 and the V8. I am sure the magazine was not New West I don't think that would have been available in my little town in the Old East. Prior to reading this thread I have never heard of that publication.

Did Rod Simpson run with you guys on Mulholland? Could it have been his car? I do remember reading about him as well.

Derek it's possible that was the story. I cant say for sure. What magazine and date of the issue? Is there a photo of the 911 with the engine lid open?

Thanks again great thread.

This shot is from a slalom in (I think) 1976, maybe OMS. Pretty sure this is Rod Simpson's car or at least one he built. Note the stack of business cards on the air cleaner. I don't recall him running on Mulholland but it was a long time ago.

Good shot Kurt.
I think you are correct that he didn't run Mul.
He was a Santa Monica Policeman as I recall, or was just retired when I met him I think. He was contemplating making V8 911s in quantity.

porcupine911 01-21-2011 12:13 PM

nice one jeremy!

Noah930 01-21-2011 01:15 PM

Nice write-up, Jeremy. Too bad I didn't know about it earlier to have offered congratulations in person.

Jeremy Cottrell 01-21-2011 04:58 PM

Hey Rocky, thanks for posting that. Thanks guys for the kind words.

And yes, Chris, that's Deadmans. I felt it was fitting as a tribute to the hill itself.

I'm going to write up a little history behind all this Porsche and Mulholland stuff for the guys who don't know me so well. It's all a kind of fun Mulholland story.

Rockyrat 01-21-2011 05:42 PM

You're welcome Jeremy. I've had the issue for about a month. I've probably read it a dozen times, and this was the first time that I noticed it. As I used to live on Skyline Dr. then I should be embarassed that I didn't pick it out it right away.
