That's scary good! There were no curbs of sidewalks at grandstands like now. I don't think there were curbs at all between Skyline and Coldwater. Grandstands was just a dirt turnout about 40 feet deep by maybe 150 feet long with a dirt hill on the back side about 20 feet tall. You could climb up on top of the hill and see almost the entire course.

Now you have to program more cars. 510s, built Minis, V6 Capris, maybe even a certain primered decrepit '65 Mustang coupe.

thanks for your reply, that makes it alot easier for me if its just a dirt turnout with a hill on the end for viewing. was the doughnuts area simular aswell?

I'm not sure what part was called donuts. Different groups sometimes had different names for turns.

I'm the one who wrote the magazine article that seems to be generating conversation. It was called "Thunder Road" (over my objection) and it featured photos of Chris (Banning) and John (Hall). It was made into an eminently forgettable movie that captured none of the spirit of the racing that I observed, but movies rarely do. It's interesting to hear someone refer to Ol' Charley. He really was King of the hill, in my judgment, though I was not a racer. It was Chris and John who called him that. I'd be happy to answer any questions about it that might be helpful.

I've thought of you many times over the years with good thoughts and wishes, and hoped that one day our paths would cross again so I could tell you how grateful I have always been for your superior writing skills, interest in Mulholland, and for that great article that you did for New West Magazine. I sincerely hope life has treated you well and that good health and happiness has been your fortune.

If you have read this unbelievable thread you know that what Derek started became something of epic proportions and it personally lit a fire under me and made me fix the Carrera finally (thanks again Derek and to all who lit the match). So if you want to go for a little putt on Mulholland sometime, please don't hesitate to say so. It would be my honor.

(It's about time we had a Mullholland gathering guys, been too long, partly my fault yes).

Excellent job! We've been looking for this a long time.

Only minor refinements are requiredl (landscaping and small details), Doughnuts is perfect by the way. I applaude your efforts.

And yes...the beer cans go out the drivers side window and would not be visible in the forward looking scene.

This reminds me of Charlie and the street lamp at Bowmont. Did i recount that story earlier? With 300 pages to peruse, it would take a while ;-)

Does anyone here have a copy of the New West article that they could send to me?

Wish I knew how the real vette looked like? at the moment this is what i have on the real charlie vette.

tires - goodyear bluestreak's slicks, 13" rear 10" front.
engine - chevy 427 big block? over 500 hp?
flared wheel arches
bushing kit from dick gulstrand
cut down station wagon coils on front
very stiff rear (no movement)

colors
flared wheel arches are grey
body is chevy marina blue? not red like in king of the mountain.

orignal car is 1966 Chevrolet fastback Corvette.

There's a coincidence for you, David Barry wrote the article "Thunder Road", I bought my first Porsche from David Barry. The '73 that ended up as an updated slope nose that ran the "PVT DNCR" plates.
If I'm not mistaken I scanned and posted the article he wrote about the car about a year after I bought it from him. You'll have to search for it yourself, 300 pages are too many to look thru tonight.

Excellent! Now make the car Marina Blue, wheels/tires should stick out from wheelwells at least 4 inches, add just a tiny bit of grey primer to each wheelarch.

The long big black sidepipes with openings just in front of rear wheels should be darker if possible. My memory recalls Charley had the hood on most of the time so you might want to have it installed.

Also, graphics are much better now, please add tons of green to the downhill slopes for accuracy in all areas except opposite Grandstands. Uphill slopes are good in the Racecourse, but a touch more (uphill) green west of Upper Coldwater would be nice.

Charlie's Vette looked like a Gran Sport Clone before I knew what that was and according to him had a Chevrolet 427 built by Ed Pink.

It also had vents cut in the body behind the wheel wells and an adjustable rear spoiler ala Nascar. I saw the car often but never without the hood.

Charlie did some Hi Performance tuning ( valve adjustments ) on a few of my Camaro's back in the day. I wish I could find a picture of the Vette sitting in the Chevron gas station on NWC of Crescent Heights & Beverly Blvd.

here is more progress on the track, no marina blue corvette yet. But its a full onboard of the track in daylight from truckstop to 405 freeway. Sorry if i may have pointed out chris bannings house. Also sorry that the gear stick is on the left side, and speedo in km/h. I'm an Aussie and half Romanian.

luckly i do have black and white aerial photography from the 50's 60's and 70's. grandstands is a huge dirt patch. looks like there is a quarry at doulnuts!?
