The Hill Continued

For those of you who don't know after Charlie, which I too experienced his crazy, sort of controlled, alcoholic driving style.....OK. Chris became the talk of the hill and his RSR was something to see. Here is one for your books Chris, does the name Phil Jackson ring a bell? No not the Laker Coach........come on. You see back then Mul was patrolled by LAPD Hollywood Division. Well needless to say the typical black and white was really no match for any properly set up car and with only 1 Helicopter the only chance they had was doing their raids on grandstands. But we were never there, especially Chris and the RSR. At this point of time we were either flat out racing or parked in the garage (or in Chris's case his living room). Anyways back to officer Phil, I was ridding shot gun in a friends Corvette going across the hill and as we passed Bowmount heading to Coldwater a car pulled out of Bowmount lights off, and then all lights on including a little red one on the dash. We pulled over just passed grandstands of course waving to the Ford Ranchero (G---) that seemed to be there every night. The car was different, it was mean looking dark in color no two tone stuff. We were asked to get out of the car so we did, holy **** the police car had a roll cage in it, holy **** the officer's badge says P. JACKSON. Well LAPD I guessed built special pursuit cars for the Hollywood frwy in the early 70's and so this was made for the Hill and to catch the famous Silver RSR. Hey Chris didn't Phil Jackson have some racing experience. Anyways a special Police Pursuit car for THE HILL stuff like that just does not happen anymore.

Yes, I agree. It's the stuff that makes the Lore a legend.

Yeah, now they just have helicopters all over the place.

No fun. :(

Gtiken 02-27-2007 09:34 PM

Back in the day we had G-Shock Watches, Radar Detectors, Scanners and tailite cutout switches. Some of us had CB or other two way communications.

Today THEY have Helicopters all over the place with FLIR and the patrol units have mastered the pit manuever.

No fun at all. Then they took away Malibu Gran Prix. Yep no fun at all.

George- i think what you saw was one of the special LAPD pursuit Oldsmobile 88's. The cops actually wore their motorcycle helmets when driving them! As you may remember the LAPD used to have major jurisdiction on L.A.'s freeways. The CHP was delegated to the outer highways of the state, not in town. So they had these 425 cubic inch , 4 barrel, dual exhaust pursuit Olds for the LAPD (Kind like a 442 on steroids with 2 extra doors). I don't remember seeing more than 2 with the roll cage- but they did indeed have them!
My "introduction" was to witness a pursuit on Magnolia/ Sherman Oaks when they were chasing a Dodge Charger from Van Nuys Blvd.

pursuit car

Hey Dave your probally right on the car. I was just so focused on the Officer - P. Jackson we had heard of him from other policemen coming up to the Hill and how he was going to catch the Silver Porsche. Plus keeping our hands on the roof of the Corvette we were in, empty our pockets etc. and all that fun stuff they make you do you know, hard to tell what it was but no doubt solid color and roll cage......I thought Dodge made something for them or maybe Plymouth oh well still pretty cool roll cage and all.

Old Man Gary

Yes, Jeff.
Old man Gary still hangs out on Mulholland, and still has the old Ranchero, but without the arrow.
He went to the Petersen Automotive Museum for the book signing of The Mulholland Experience last year and he contributed to the information in the book as well.

If anyone is interested go to themulhollandexperience.com to get an idea of what the book is all about. The first edition has many grammatical errors but still has the info on Mulholland. The second edition will be much improved with some more information, photos and stories.

I found this great shot of John's ACR Camaro (in it's prime) sitting in grandstands.

Another shot of the ACR Camaro after a fun night racing Mulholland.
Note: Gotta watch out for those head-on collisions, they're a bummer.

KevinP73 02-28-2007 04:12 PM

I don't know how accurate the story is but I had an "old timer" tell that back in the day when the police would impound cars that they knew belonged to trouble makers or car thieves, they would remove the plug wires or pull the drive shaft to make sure the impounded car stayed impounded.
Is that a drive shaft I see on the hood?

Banning 02-28-2007 04:22 PM

The Driveshaft on John's hood is there because it fell off during the accident. But, I never heard about cars being disabled by the cops. They probably want you to race/park it again so that they can impound your car repeatedly. In fact, in the last of the racing days, Chuck T. would get his car impounded on such a regular basis that the impound yard would just leave it outside because they knew he would be along soon to retrieve it. Chuck was the last of the last die hard racer that refused to give up his right to park at Grandstands. He got impounded many times.

You could here that thud from grandstands, and subsequent 9K WOT on John's car. By the time we drove down there Dave R. was still unconcious in his 510.John was e/b,DR w/b,both making passes. If you look at the one photo you can see DR's 510 resting drivers right of the camaro(in back of what appears to be a shadow grey SS454 El Camino)Match up the impact-they were both committed, both in oncoming lanes.Looks like Dave was at the apex and John had just turned in..

Another ACR Camaro, one of four built 1988 RPO 1LE cars

They would have driven something like this. I found this modified AMC LAPD Race car on the web and p.s'd it in.
A studio car for Adam 12............ but.......I thought it was all in good humor.

( One Adam 12 see the man at Mulholland & Coldwater)http://www.veoh.com/videos/e104046Fn8ngJMW

If Mulholland was active today like it was in the past the LAPD would be tooling Charger Duty vehicles up there at night and the Motor cops would be on BMW's or Harleys.

Saugus Speedway it is. The sponsor behind the car is Gus' Tools ,a local tool shop on Soledad Cyn Rd in Canyon Country.
