this thead just keeps getting better.

crush301's Story reminds me of an episode of TJ Hooker (curiously the only one I ever remember watching) where they were trying to catch a Jewel Smuggler? or something that raced the canyons in a 911 and parked it in his house. In the end, his young partner had tricked out the police cruiser with a roll bar and some shocks which was enough for Hooker to run down the Porsche.

Tom Mix, the special guest, was famously killed in a car crash.

Wasn't that a CHiPs episode? If not, it was the same basic plot

I need some salsa for those chips (CHiP's highway scenes were filmed near my house on the previously incomplete 210 Freeway).

I thought the best part of the Mulholland Festival notice was its noted return drive is eastbound ONLY. Sounds like they had something in mind?

The west LA ride and drive is sponsered by the Ferrari Club of America. Lots of fast cars participate. I thought this might be of interest.

Thomas Owen 03-03-2007 11:15 AM

It took me 5 days off and on to read this thread all the way through and all I can say is "I am probably alive today because I grew up a long way from Mulholland".

At 15, my first 'car' was a VW I shortened with a fiberglass dune buggy body. I ordered that body out of California and waited forever for it to arrive. Wish I could remember the manufacturer... When I turned 16 and drove it to High School for the first time the general reaction was "what the h$ll is THAT?"

I graduated high school in '72 and had the '69 Z28 and got in trouble many a time, but if Mulholland had been in my neighborhood there is no telling what would have happened! We had the regular meeting places for a quick drag race, but nothing like this twisty road course with a viewing area for the spectators....man that must have been something.

One funny story I have is about fuel for my car when I was in High School. The Z used more than I could afford so I would siphon some out of my Dad's company car every other night. About a month later he comes home drving a different car and we ask why - "The motor pool is trying to figure out why I am only getting about 1 mile per gallon". If course then the loaner started getting the same poor mileage and they thought it was how he drove the car...
Make a long story short, one night my Mom comes out to have a cigarette on the sly and catches me with the can and siphon hose. At that point we both made a pact - she to keep quiet about the gas, and me to keep mum on the cigarettes. She is 83 now and my Dad has passed away but we can still laugh about "that night" and the secret pact!

The interest here for me is reading about what guys my age were doing during the late '60's and into the '70's on the West Coast, and it is truly amazing the amount of action and friendship that grew from the area.

Thanks so much to all that provided input to the thread - it is without a doubt the most interesting I have followed since joining here in 1999.

Chris Banning - when is the second edition of your book going to come out? Where is the first edition available?

Best Regards,

Hi Thomas,
Loved your story about the fiberglass body on the VW. The 1969 Z28 was such a fast car, I bet you have some stories to tell about your escapades with that machine. My friends that had '69 Z's told me about some hair raising experiences that came inheirent with the car.
Of all the Chevrolet cars, I always liked the Camaros and Chevelles the most. My 1973 454 Corvette ended up going off the cliff near the Stone Canyon Resevoir on Mulholland due to being a big, heavy, cumbersome plow. And it's a good thing that there wasn't any oncoming traffic when I crossed the double-yellow and went sailing off the cliff and into a tree head on. The tree kept me from going right into someone's house that was built just below Mulholland Drive. Ouch!
You mentioned an interest in the book. The first edition of the book, The Mulholland Experience is available at Autobooks in Burbank, CA. Call them and they will send you a copy. Their phone number is 818-8450707. The first edition is a little rough but still the stories are there and are very entertaining.

I just saw one of those go for $9k in the Recycler.

I had one briefly back in my Pizmo Beach Days with a 2180, drove it a little on the street with big G50 slicks on the rear. I hated the huge metal flake in the gelcoat because it reminded me of a Schwinn Stingray bicycle seat. Kept cracking the transmission nose/ pan mount. Gee I wonder why? It would pull the front wheels off the ground for about 20 feet on a hard launch. Guy who bought still has it although its a little worse for wear. Remember those sandrails called "Pinto Beans"? Same guy put a flat 6 in a Squareback and won the Ego Challenge at Saugus Speedway back in 85'. I recall it was a track record for non V8 cars.

TRE Cup 03-07-2007 09:20 AM

Ego Challenge at Saugus Speedway: There was a 1/4 mile basically flat oval bull ring just north of L.A. where the stock cars, demo derbies, figure 8, and "train" races would take place on weekend nights. One of the POC guys told us about the Ego Challenge. For $10 you got to do 2 laps and set a time. They would send the cars out one at a time. The fastest of the evening receives a trophy.
My brother took his 911 RS clone- 3 liter RSR style engine, R compound tires, set up suspension. Fast tight car as we had taken 3rd overall in the 86 Tribute to Le Mans enduro. I took one of our Mini Cooper S's. You arrive well ahead of time before the real events , so the promotor helps fill the stands and patronage of the ever present smell coming from the Fried Chicken Stand. (Dang announcer just could not shut up pushing that chicken! )
Anyway, we perused the competition in the paddock prior to lining up. Amongst the cars were some sports cars, Honda Civic, and some Americun Iron. One of which was piloted by this woman that had apparently invested a LOT in her EGO Challenge car: 69 Z 28 all set up with offset rims on one side, weight jacking, automatic with quickshift, suspension, totally stripped and lightened.
Hmm... Ya' think she took this seriously? You betcha! We found out she was the reigning overall time lap champion and had not been defeated.
So we line up, I go out first in the mini. It does not like long flat turns at all. I was pushing (gotta use the right terms considering where i was) huge! Alas- you only get 1.75 laps from a dead start so that was it for me- I sucked

My brother, Jim, was further back in the line and went out to do his lap(s). The stock car racers were watching from the pit fence and immediately recognized something fast was on the track. I overheard comments like " Da*n fast corner speed" and " He's gettin thru there pretty good" . Jim was indeed doing a terrific job; the rear end was hanging out just right for the second lap. The announcer then told everyone that this lil porch set a new track record for the Ego Challenge ! Oh this was soooo.. cool !!
Well, the lady in the set up Camaro was visibly upset. This teutonic back motored back a** dragging car had whupped her. It came time for her to run. The announcer was making something of it to- " Will she take back her record?"
So out she goes- she drove straight across the track to the other side so she could get the turns 3/4 and the whole straight to warm up (Apparently this was allowed in the rules, but as novices we knew nothing about it)
She ripped and snorted thru the turns, sliding the back end out just right. Not good enough ! Porsche came and whupped a**

To celebrate we took Little Tujunga back to the valley and had a great time "road racing" . Something we understood a whole lot more than just turning left

Great story Dave. Gotta love the egotistical lady getting handed her a$$ by a "tail dragger". Excellence was expected!:D

HEY, I remember seeing a few of those at Saugus. Mostly we saw a lot of ego's being truly 'crushed' as that track was flat or maybe a little OFF CAMBERED. Got to see a lot of wannabes back their pride and joy's into the turn 3 outer wall.

Much to the delight of the fans.

Now THAT is a great story. Good for Jimmy! Do you know if the record was ever broken..............or if the lady ever showed her face there again.
