Production Shoot on Mulholland 11/27- 11/30
No Parking & Alternating Directional Closures
According to the Production office/Production manager and confirmed by FilmLA:
This is a fully permitted, union shoot for a new LA based TV series, Too Old to Die Young. Scheduled to take place Monday 11/27- Thursday AM 11/30. The exact location is Laurel Pass to Summit Circle.
This shoot will have a crew of 60 working out of their base camp, the Tree People parking lot. Expect to see crews arriving around 3pm.
Rehearsals on the side of the road from 5p-7p.
ALTERNATING DIRECTIONAL CLOSURES as they film from 7pm to 6am on Tuesday and Wednesday and until 8am on Thursday.
NO PARKING ANYTIME on 11/27-11/29 and from 7am- 10pm on 11/30.
There will be four LAPD officers and a Fire Safety Adviser on set to ensure public safety.
Gunfire is listed in the permit request. The production manager stated that they have reduced to ¼ loads, which will minimize the noise significantly. The production has made numerous other changes to their creative plans in order to reduce their impact on the community. FilmLA is looking into limiting the gunfire to earlier in the night shoot, as opposed to later.
Plan your commutes through this area accordingly. If you have concerns about alternate routes, contact FilmLA for suggested detours.
Please DO NOT CALL the Council Office, Production Officer or FilmLA and ask that this LEGALLY PERMITTED shoot be shut down, forced to change their hours or moved to another part of Mulholland.

Claims a truck crossed the double yellow line. Saw the video before he took it down, truck was barely over if at all. Looks like he panicked and had some lift off over steer straight into the wall. He was even wearing a shirt that said "don't cross the double yellow" when it happened. Operator error.

It's been so many years I don't really remember. I think we may have met at a school or church off Mul near Sepulveda, so it was likely taken in that area...

Ron Cortez has passed

We lost another one. For the SoCal boys who were raised on IMSA and SCCA Ron was pretty well known. Hanging with the likes of our own Victor Van Tres, Pat Pearson and Lance Stewart back in the showroom stock days of Riverside Raceway.

On January 10,2018 Ron Cortez went home to victory lane.

A born racer, Ron was a fixture at Sears Point for nearly 30 years. Ron’s Tire Shop AIM, (AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL MOTORSPORTS), was a clubhouse and classroom. Aside from mounting race tires, Ronnie mentored and shaped many champions, drawing from knowledge gained during his many years as a “driver.” Ron was also an integral part in the conception and development of a number of racing series for NASA and the SCCA. Sanctioning bodies, folks in the tower, paddock and pits have all benefited from Ron’s participation in motorsport.

August 6, 1950 ~ January 10, 2018 (age 67)

I am one of the Resident Corvette Race car Owner's and mostly a Turnbull Canyon alumni in C2/C3 Corvettes, 67 Camaro, and a Porsche 914- V8 Rod Simpson Conversion car, but also a Mulholland Alumni also.

I am still a Porsche fan, as you can see on Pg. 339 of this thread, as we still have cars in our family.

I have been documenting the exploits of the Corvette crowd on these roads (Mulholland, Turnbull Canyon, Glendora, and others) and got this reply on Corvette forum, from someone who knew the legend of Mulholland "Charlie Woit"

My thoughts of those days were sparked this morning after seeing a Corvette Stingray on Ebay which is similar to Charlies last car......
So I googled Mulholland Charlie, found some info, read it.
Some of the info is accurate, most of it is a mixture of info and stories of Charlie, Ronell, and Richard Gray and Dana Zither on his Norton, Carl Moore on his BSA (Carls turn) and others from that era.
First of all......the story of Charlie driving with one hand on the steering wheel and the other wrapped around a can of beer.....follow him by the trail of beer cans.....total BS. Crap. Charlie was more like a priest of street racing and a guru of developing well engineered street race cars on a shoestring budget. He didn't drink. And he was very very concentrated in his endeavors. The idea that he was crazy or ever referred to as "Crazy Charley" is not true. The racing took place at night so you could see if someone was coming the other way so you could shut down or so they could see you coming and get out of the way. Not crazy. (Kinda)...
I recall Gordon Karrell telling me that when he was a DJ at the radio station on top of the hill above Carls turn that he would see Charlie practice during the day at Carls turn, but first Charlie would get out his push broom and carefully sweep the pavement, THEN practice!! True story.!!!
Charlie's cars being described in the available info online are a mishmash of the various street racing cars built in Laurel Canyon in that era. Yes his first race vehicle was an early fifties half ton GMC pickup, (not a Chevy) with a GMC truck V6 from a later model GMC, which with drag slicks the legend was that it had so much torque and traction it would do wheel stands. I never saw it actually do a wheel stand although Richard Gray said he did.
The Hillman car discussed didn't exist.
The Simca discussed online was Richards.....but the idea of the rear mounted radiator is from Ronnells full race grey Sunbeam Alpine (McCullough supercharged!)....
The 1955 Ford was not a station wagon but a 2 door coupe, yes as stated with a straight 6. Charlie fabricated his own intake manifold and headers. It had a 4 barrel carb! Interior gutted with one race seat. Charlie would race in that Ford and beat then newish Cobras.

The Corvette was 427. It was either black or dark blue (not red)....Full race, with lights and wipers, marginal mufflers etc for street racing. I seriously doubt that Charlie went to anyone like Dick Guldstrand since money was always an issue back then and Charlie had the ability to engineer his own setup......Charlie died in his Corvette in a racing wreck in Bouquet Canyon, I can't remember when exactly but the info online is most likely accurate or close to it.

Yes Steve Mcqueen has a Jag XKSS, (awesome!!) but that was in the late 50's.
Charlie era was 1960 on.
Steve Mcqueen story had to do with his being beaten on Mulholland by Ronnell.......Steve in his Mini Cooper S (big bucks very modded) vs Ronnell's Sunbeam.
Might have more real stories if anyone is interested......not sure.

Great addition, to the history!

Doug Hooper who won the first C2 Sting Ray victory ever at Riverside International Raceway in 1962, against the 1st Shelby Cobra ever raced that day indicated that he sold parts to Charlie, but Doug used to get things from Guldstrand. Just about every Corvette that could handle on the west coast and many many many in the other parts of the Country had some Guldstrand parts. Most you could install yourself. In 1971 Guldstrand sold Solid bushings, Bump Steer blocks, double adjust Koni's, Beefed up relay rod, HD idler arms, HD tie rod arms, All of the race sway bars, spreader bars, camber modified Strut rod bracket and the heimed strut rods, etc. etc. Our car that ran thru Mulholland, was equipped with such going back to the beginning of the 1970's. My Father and Dick Guldstrand were good friends, going back to the C1 Corvette days of the late 1950's. I shared some of that on Pg. 340 or 341 here.
