Since it's too cold to work outside on any bodywork or paintwork, I'm turning my attention indoors. I have most of the parts needed to complete this Mulholland Targa except a Motor and Transmission. I believe it won't be difficult to find a 915 Gearbox, they seem to be available for around $3k. Porsche Engines from the early years are now quite costly. In the 70's you could get a Complete 911 Engine for around $500. Now more like 3 to 7 thousand dollars.
First I went looking for parts in the Garage, the Shed, the House, and outside. In the Shed I located an old 1971 Porsche 911 Engine Case that's been laying around for many years. ![]() ![]() Nearby I found a box that has a 911 Oil Pump inside. Also a set of 911 Camshafts are next to the Pump Box. Not far away are boxes of Engine Assembly Hardware. Somewhere is a box of 911 Cylinder Heads that are beautifully Ported but are damaged from melted Valve Guides. They will need rebuilding. ![]() |

I was scrounging up stuff in the Garage and saw this 1973 Clutch and Flywheel poking out.
Lo and behold, there was also a 2.4 Crankshaft under there. ![]() I'll have to check the bearing clearances on the Main and Rod Journals. I believe it needs to be re-ground. ![]() In an unmarked Box on a shelf in the Garage I found a box of 2.4 Connection Rods. I'll have to weigh each one to make sure they are a matching set. ![]() |

The reason that I have a spare 911 Engine laying around in pieces is because I wanted to build one for a Early VW Bus. I have an extra 911 oil tank and Circuit Board to do this. You may wonder how am I going to mate the 911 Engine to the VW Transaxle.
Many years ago I got a very special Flywheel that is now the base of a 911 Crankshaft Lamp that I made. This Flywheel has the center of a 911 Flywheel welded to the outer part of a VW Flywheel and makes it possible for a 911 Engine installation into a early VW with a Clutch that works properly. Now it looks like this Engine will go into the Mulholland Targa. I was considering putting my old Chevy 350 Race Motor into the Targa since I always wanted a V8 911. This may not happen. This Engine came from my old Camaro A-Sedan that I raced at Riverside International Raceway in the late 70's with SCCA. This Engine is a IROC LT1 Traco Motor that puts out around 425 Horsepower. Forged Crank, Flash Ground and Balanced Connecting Rods. Hi-Nickel Block, Corvette Heads with 2.02 intake Valves. Crane Roller Rockers, Double Springs, Titanium Keepers, and the 30-30 Service Cam made for the 1969 Z28. It is a Solid Lifter Camshaft. TRW Forged Aluminum Pistions 11:1 Edelbrock Scorpion-Tarantula Aluminum Intake Manifold with a Holley 850 Double-Pumper. Fuel pump block off, Milodon Right and Left hand turn Racing Oil Pan and Power Pulley. Heads and Crankshaft are not bolted on but use Milodon Chrome-Moly Studs for installation. Unilite Distributer and Hooker Headers. The Engine is barely broken-in with under 100 miles on it. This would be a powerful Motor to put into a 911 Body and is not much heavier when Aluminum Heads are used. ![]() Last edited by Banning; 03-20-2020 at 02:25 PM.. Reason: addition |

The '69 Z28 was a 302ci, right? My father-in-law was/is a muscle car guy and was talking up that engine. Lots of great stories from him, he would've fit right in on Mul back in the day. My wife has a 400 block with a 350 crank and aluminum heads in her '87 S-10 truck. If I remember correctly, it's .030 over making it a 377ci. We have a gen4 6.0 LS engine with LS3 casting heads sitting on an engine stand waiting to go in.....some day.

The man on the tv says the world is ending, but a nice drive on Mulholland reminds me otherwise.
Beautiful morning in Los Angeles. Dropped a friend off to get in line at the grocery store, and headed up Beverly Glen. East on Mulholland and had it just about all to myself. Cool, clear and sunny. Green as can be. There’s nothing like a spring drive up there after some rain. Not even one cyclist ‘til I got to Skyline! Glad to see this thread still here. Finished reading it in it’s entirety back in December. I’ve spent a lot of time up there (after most of the racing days gone by sadly). It’s been a lot of fun reading the history ‘first hand’. May have to go pick up Chris’s book when business gets back normal around here. Thanks for all the fun reading and stay safe all.
