Avis or Hertz for car rental - love or hate one?

I get discounts with those two through work. It looks like the price is about the same either way (285 vs 300). Anyone got any strong love/hate for either one? Right now I'm leaning towards Avis. It's the 285, and Hertz is using Kias as its "example" cars while Avis is using Toyotas. I assume things haven't changed much since I used to rent for work frequently. What car you actually get probably varies between a bunch of stuff, but the Kias aren't inspiring.

I use both as well and neither love nor hate either one. Whomever gives me the best deal, gets my business. I do think I get a better class of cars at Avis though.

I honestly find them all to be pretty generic at this point

I like Hertz more....the lines at the rental counter for Hertz seem to always go faster.

I always use Hertz, GF uses Avis. Certainly seems like Avis has better cars but Hertz is cheaper. we dont have to wait in line at either place but i just used Hertz today in New Orleans and they are now charging a $44.00 location usage fee!! (on top of all the other facility charges, taxes, etc.

I'm anti-Hertz.

I got into a car accident with a Hertz rental car in early May. I had given up hope of Hertz ever accepting liability. It took a couple months for Hertz to file a claim with ESIS, then it took a couple more months for ESIS to assign an adjuster to the claim. In the end, Hertz accepted responsibility, but it was over 4 months before they did so.

So Hertz is on my sh t list.

Both are interchangeable. Best advice I can provide, steer clear of Sixt.

It’s really location specific. I rent from them all and have had great and terrible experiences with all of them.

I use Avis for work and personal. I was happy to not get a larger vehicle in SoCal. Stupid hybrid though, I could not tell if the car had started and had to ask an attendant a stupid question.

I would stay away from Hertz. There are too many reported issues with excessive billing for "damage" identified by their AI damage detectors that you drive through when returning a car.

I've never used either but have rented a lot from Enterprise. Always great smiling, happy people at the desk and customer service. Curbed a wheel a little once, showed them on return, said don't worry about it.

I had billing trouble with Hertz long ago (extra charges that were getting snuck in). No experience with Avis. I've used Enterprise a couple of times without issue.

I get a discount on National through work and am in their "Emerald Club". I get good service and a reasonable selection of cars. No issues and no hassles.

I hate both. Avis tends to be terrible service and cars are dirty. Hertz has screwed me post rental on multiple occasions despite having premium status. I try to stick with National or Enterprise, who have both treated me well over many years of travel.

It’s not the question you asked but I have had good luck with Enterprise as well for many years.

Agree with Enterprise, they and National used to have a fleet of crap smoker cars. I last used Enterprise for a 1 way rental from LAX to North County SD, 3 weeks ago. Excellent car and service both ends. Return office was 5 miles from my home. Total cost was $54

National is my go-to, Enterprise is plan B. I love National’s aisle where you can pick your own car for one price, and their service is great. Enterprise has more neighborhood pickup and drop off locations and their points go to my National account for free days.

I normally use Enterprise since it's been years since I rented at an airport. And yeah, I used to use national too.

I went with Avis. The cost for Avis with my company discount was about 40% so significant for a week rental.

Well, looks like I'll be changing my reservation as soon as I change my flight. Let's see how easy Avis makes it.
