To get back on subject...........

I forgot to talk about the car rallies we had on Mulholland in the late 70's. I used to call them "Death rallies" because they were so hair-raising. These rallies were put on by the ACR, I believe that the CRE also had similar rallies. I participated in the last rally with my new 1978 Camaro Z28 setup for Mul with Pirellis, Konis, solid sway bushings, B&M Shift Kit, Hooker Roll Bar, brake light cut-offs, and all blacked out trim. This is the same car that I later came out the window of at 85mph on Mulholland in a horrific head on.

The rally was an adventure for sure that evening with the route going down Benedict Cyn., cutting over to Beverly Glen to Mulholland to Coldwater and up Laurel ending up near the racecourse.

The fastest cars were in the front positions thru the rally, however.. one car would be getting chased by a black and white, and because we were going faster than they could go we traded off who was getting chased. So one car would lose the cops while the one behind would pick up the same ones just following the first. Some friends who were spectators that evening got some real entertainment. It got a little crazy. It seemed with egos on the line, the participants drove like madmen, they drove like they were being chased by the devil. I'm glad no one got hurt. But we decided to quit having the Mulholland Rallies just as matter of good sense.

 :D

So much for auto focus at night. I also need a better camera mount.

Oh, there is more...

Another neat place to stop over is the Union Hotel in Los Alamos (~20 miles North of Buellton). Several theme rooms, a 1800's Gold Rush era bar room that was moved to the site from Carson City, and much more.

There's also Cambria near SLO. Tons of great places to eat and B&B's to stay the night.

Speaking of wineries, you need to stop at Arciero's. There are a few of his race cars on display at that location as well.

I decided on Urban Camouflage, because it is the same metallic brown/gold paint that most Corollas are painted. It even has the AAA sticker on the left side of the rear bumper. I'll admit, that I accidentally tried to unlock the wrong Corolla in a parking lot once. My Toyota also has its fair share of dings and dents, thereby blending in to its surrounding. :)

Is that the Coldwater tower or the one over by the 405 at Disneys "hidden" studio?

I know, D is for Dave!

Ok, I'll bite. Does Disney have a secret studio? The picture is the water tower at the top of Bowmont Dr.

Dave

They have an animation studio at Walt Disney Drive just west of the bridge over the 405. A friend of mine who works at Panavision says the creatives are locked up there.

The picture of the tower threw me with the D.

The "D" appeared earlier this week. It is in the Disneyland font, but as of yet, no reports as to who put it up.

Here's a little bit of history.
One weekend evening in 1976, John H. was driving his blue VW Bug back and forth in the Racecourse. It was a very fast Beetle. A friend asked to take it for a few passes and John threw him the keys. He took off fast, but upon returning lost control, overstered, and hit the telephone pole right next to where bystanders were on Mulholland(at Grandstands).

Now the VW was totaled and sat in Bart R. backyard for 8 months. Bart spray painted "MULL CAN BE HAIRY" on the VW. This became a saying that was used for years and years and this is the origin of that saying.

This is the original car with the real spray message on it.(photo courtesy/Bart R.)

That's pretty good, Dave. It's hard to get the visual effect of night racing on the hill however if you speed that up about 3 or 4 times, yep, that's about it. One only needs a very good memory to know where the road goes.

Those are awesome pictures Jeff. I think you need to start your own vintage pic. thread.
