Dave,
Indeed, the guy you're thinking of is Jr Wilson from Salinas.
Jr holds the alltime record in the unlimited class @ Silver State.
207 mph avrg. I think.
Over the years he built a number of panteras, each more radical
than the last. His final car being a tube framed monster powered
by a 540 ci Boss 429 with over 900 hp. In the later years of his
career he suffered a number of high speed tire blowouts, the last
of which saw him leaving the road in exess of 200 mph.
That accident left him with a compound fracture of the femur
and a perminant limp. He then retired the Pantera in favor of
something safer....so he built himself a gxsr 1100 powered
super kart! Which he proceeded to launch off a cliff @ La Carrera
re breaking the same leg. After that the wifey said no more.
Jr is now ritired. One of his old cars, restored basicly back to stock was recently up for sale.

peace, Kiley

We were on our way up to the Monterey Historics, don't remember which year. My buddy the writer had a Pontiac 6000 STE test car from GM that he loaned me for the weekend. There were three cars in our group, the Pontiac, Ricky VB in his 914-6 (the evil cockroach), and Scott Call in his built Datsun 610. Jeremy's brother drove the Pontiac all way up but I don't recall who else was along for the ride. So we head up north on Hwy 1. We got up around Big Sur, maybe 30 miles south of Carmel and came up behind a pristine Jag XK120 roadster. Ricky was first in line and blasted by the guy with ease. Then Scott was behind him and the guy in the Jag jumps on it! This guy was really working this car. Sliding around the turns on the narrow bias plys and hammering the big six out of the turns. I can still picture the Jag driver, bolt upright in the cockpit, sawing at the wheel elbows out in the breeze. It was great!! Scott had him in the turns but the Jag had the power. We were barely keeping up in the Poncho and just really enjoying the show.

When we got to Carmel we pulled up next to the guy and we were all laughing like idiots. That guy could really drive!

Ciao babies!
Kurt O.

If my 12 year old memory serves me, I think I was in the 6000 on the first leg of that run. Riding with Scott Call has always left an impression on me and I don't think I was in the 610 that day. I think I was in the back seat of the 6000 till we got to the Madonna Inn. From there I hopped into Rick VB's 914-6 (Now Dave B's Evil Cockroach) Back then Rick had the car powered by a stock 3.0 CIS motor. From the Madonna Inn we hit Hwy. 1 and running 110+ through some tight corners got my attention quickly and began to mold me at a very tender age (12 years old). My fondest memory was pulling up behind a Ferrari 365GTB Daytona, and seeing the driver jump on it leaving plumes of black smoke from the exhaust. Ricky, in defense, grabbed a gear and stood on it with the 6. As we pulled up next to the Daytona at about 120, the driver looked at me with a bizzare look. Why is this VW-Porsche 914 passing my V12 Ferrari?? At about 130 I caught eye contact with his son who was about my age. I think he and I exchanged a friendly wave. At 145 the Ferrari backed off a bit and let us in front as we were cresting a blind hill on the wrong side of the road. That was it, I have been a Porscheholic ever since. However, I was the only 12 year old to have read Excellece Was Expected at that time.

We got to Laguna, and I got in for free, cause Rick told the guy at the gate I was only 10. Then you guys took pics on me sitting at the Corkscrew with a beer in my hand at 12. Mom loved it.

Then we went to the hotel and set off the Clifford alarms of Dave B's blue Targa and Jim B's red Turbo for the night.

Then there was the San Fran incedent involning my brother which Kurt may remember. "So if Tony goes to jail, we have another key to the room" Too bad our old friend Rick isn't around to elaborate. RIP RVB, another plaque on the hill may be appropriate for another great friend.

Fellas,
Your stories on this thread are outstanding. Although I live on the east coast, I have heard of the legend of Mullholland Drive. To read your accounts of your past expereinces is a treat for all of us who would have enjoyed "being there".
Thank you and keep it going!
Just one question and maybe I just missed this answer. The question that started this tread, does the car still exist?
Anyway, great job and thank you for sharing your memories.

The car is just a few feet from me while I write this reply. It is inside the house(interior garage) on Mulholland Drive. Some from this thread have seen it recently, like Jeff Hail and gostraight(Radu). I have kept it safe all these years and it is in the same configuration as when it was raced in the 70's and early 80's. Time has stood still for the Mulholland Carrera. Almost every if not every Mulholland racer has long ago let go of their Mulholland race-car. I cannot. The Carrera is part of the family and it will not leave Mulholland, for it belongs to the lore, mystery, and legend of that famous Drive.

Mulholland has been my home since the day I was born. It is therefore very special to me in many ways, as it is to many of you.

Thanks to all who takes interest in Mulholland Drive and it's many stories and legends. You are all great to keep this alive. I'm sure that Charley would agree with me. I thank you most sincerely.:)

mam911 07-06-2007 08:01 AM

Banning,
Thank you for the update. The fact that you still have your car and you feel the way you do about it is just part of this legend of Mulholland Drive.
I believe each of us have had a car that was dear to our heart that we still wish was sitting in our garage. That fact that you still do and it is part of a time that is legendary and special to many who are reading this thread is commendable. Again, thank you and the others who are sharing your memories about your past that is not only interesting and fascinating to others, it brings some of us back to a time when things just were not that complicated.
Thanks again and keep the Mulholland Carrera where she belongs!

Thanks for the heads up, Ron. I just contacted Dave and said that I'd try to make it there Saturday morning. Looking at the race car pics on his website brings back some memories of how many of those projects got roll cages and chassis work done here in my shop. He kept me pretty busy.

Those who want to take a look, go to :

If you really want to see an oddity or two, check out the Bricklin race car! Then look at the "World's Fastest Kia" (156MPH!).

Thanks Jeff for pointing out that blog.

Here is a photo from last night at Truckstop.
It was a very nice evening to be out on Mulholland.

Radu was telling us about his new Porsche. He is making it street legal and I'm sure it will be very fast with a lightened body, 3.8 ltr motor, full cage, trick suspension, racing trans, big brakes, etc. I am looking forward to driving in it on Mulholland with Radu at the wheel.;)

After a good time watching sunset turn to night while talking about our favorite subjects, Jeff, Kiley, Jane, and myself went for some great food and atmosphere at the Pineapple Hill Grill and Saloon in Sherman Oaks. Remember Twains and Four 'n Twenty?

Now I suppose if I really want to draw you fellow Pelicans out (for a good time) I will have to repair and show up in the Porsche RSR. Something tells me the group size would increase. By the way, a Police patrol went by again several times last night with not even a glance our way.

Interesting Mulholland Pics

I was visiting the **** Library Digital Archives and found these in the ********** Collection:

Very early construction of the 405 at Mulholland Drive. Yes that is Sepulveda on the right.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1183789212.jpg

Construction of Mulholland Drive at Longridge. (Between Coldwater & Dixie somewhere?) I have seen this pic before but is was flipped around and this is the original slide.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1183789491.jpg

Construction at Laurel Canyon and Mulholland Highway. (Way Old)
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1183792156.jpg

Then I came across this photo captioned Snow on Mulholland Drive and Coldwater Canyon at Wilacre Park 1948. I have never heard of Wilacre Park before BUT as Chris knows I have this thing for telephone poles in photos to place where I think they might be. This location looks awfully familiar??????????????
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1183792305.jpg

A little more investigation on this Wilacre Park found this. Photos by Spence Aviation who is famous for taking early aerial photography of Los Angeles based at Van Nuys Airport.
1971 Wilacre Park Overlook. Wilacre Park starts at Fryman Road and Laurel Canyon and ends at the top of the Maxwell Fire Road which is Grandstands! I rode that fireroad dozen's of times as a kid and the old timers remember where it came up behind Grandstands? I do believe this photo may be the oldest known photo of Grandstands found. (or Wilacre Overlook)
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1183793168.jpg

Girl on Horse Mulholland Drive at Deep Canyon. That sure looks like the overlook across from Donuts named after Chris's neighbors! I bet that was one happy horse?

The girl on the horse is Linda Van Haneken. She grew up two houses away from me and boarded her horse there for years. She was talked about because she was often seen on Mulholland riding her horse, that was around 1970. Linda was a little younger than myself but we rode the school bus together for years. Once while walking home from the bus stop in the afternoon her German Sheppards attacked me and took a piece of my pants with them. Her mom raised chickens there next to the stable.

The photo looks like it was taken across from the Stone Canyon overlook, just west of Beverly Glen on Mulholland. Times reporters published photos of her on Mulholland regularly.

When the 1994 quake hit, three houses went down to the ground in my neighborhood, in fact one of them was my own house. Linda's mom was still living in her house at the time and it seemed undamaged but the trauma of that big shake made her leave Mulholland as it did for a few other residents that had seemingly undamaged homes. My wife and I lived in a Motor-home on Mulholland for 14 months while I rebuilt our new home in a Quake resistant Octagonal configuration. I doubled all my Engineer's values and installed thicker sheer walls, 3x4 framing throughout, and industrial grade concrete up to 15 feet thick in places. I also doubled the amount of hold-downs, sheer transfer plates, and anchor bolts. I don't want to be buried again by an Earthquake, at least while I'm alive anyway.

Jeff, thanks for posting that photo of Linda, it brings back good memories.

Anybody looks like a midget next to Dave. When my son was in elementary school, he used to remember Dave as "Abraham Lincoln". Others remembered him as the Peter Townsend look alike.
