Cool pics. I grew up in that area and it's really cool seeing how it looked back then. I once did a bootleg turn on the valley circle overpass in traffic, in the
rain. Why? cause my friends girlfriend who was in the back seat said it was
impossible. The noises coming from the back seat after were quite entertaning

Homologation stories can be interesting.

Ford had to have 500 Talladegas in one place back in 1968 to get approval for the 1969 NASCAR season. Holman-Moody had employees working overtime on weekends to make and install the aero noses, but they fell short by many cars. A row of Talladegas outside an aircraft hangar began the homologation counting process. The counting continued into the hangar, through it and on to another hangar until the required 500 were counted. While officials were counting cars inside the first hangar, the beginning of the row was moved to the tail end of the line in the second hangar! DOH!!!

A while ago I promised Chris I would post some old stories but as usual real life (not to mention
lazyness gets in the way. So, from the Dept. of better late than never:
The most F'd up car I ever drove on Mul.
I had a friend that I worked with at the Mobil station on Valley circle and Victory who had an RX2
@ the timewhich he'd wrecked. When I met him however he was suffering the sad fate of driving
a beige 6 cyl Granada.He decided that he was going to scavenge the still good drivetrain, which
featered a very built 12a and use his high school auto shop class to build a new car.
He found an RX3 in the recycler with "some body damage". But it ran. OK so of we went to deepest Van Nuys to check out this car. When we got there it we found the car had been rolled.
There wasn't an un dented panel on the car, including the roof. The owner admitted that the car
"needed some work" but proudly started it up. Hagling commenced, and a deal was made for something like $50 bucks. The plan was to drive it home but there were a few minor probelems.
The car had no seats, steering wheel or throttle linkege! "It's only a flesh wound" we said.
The steering was resolved by clamping a pair of vice grips on the steering shaft splines.
The throttle was rigged by running some heavy twine from the carb though a rub golderg style
routing around and through various brackets to a hole in the firewall.
While the seller kindly donated one of those old lowboy type lawn chairs to act as a drivers seat.
We were off!
Only one problem, our original plan was to go strait west up Victory. But the seals in the engine
were so bad that the minute you cracked the throttle you got a cloud of smoke so big it could
hide the Normandy invasion. It was comical but there was no way we were getting this thing home without getting pulled over and probobly impounded. So what to do. At first I made my buddy drive, It was his car after all. He made it up Beverly Glen to the Mul intersection before
pulling over and saying "Dude, you better drive this thing". So I did. From Beverly Glen and Mul
all the way west to home via dirt Mul.
Sitting in a lawn chair, steering with vice grips, and driving with a rope operated hand throttle!
More to come later, they actually want me to work now (the nerve!)

Hey Pat,
I love those kind of stories. Apperrently Enzo pulled a similar kind off shell game getting the
512 homolgated. Shifting cars around, taking the FIA officials to lunch @ Ferrari's private resturaunt in Maranello while mechanics stripped the parts from one chassis and put them
another. Si, of course here are the other five cars ;>)

What happened right after Beverly Glenn? I shoved my Toyota's auto tranny into what I thought was "L" at the light, but was actually in 2nd. I pulled across the intersection, shoved it into "second", actually "Drive aka 3rd" and pulled ahead of the SUV. I thought I heard a bunch of horns?!? The SUV seemed to be going very slow...

Yes, I heard the horns. Not to worry though. The SUV's on Mulholland like to bully ahead of you and proceed slowly. I guess they like to assert their right of way and happily make people suffer behind them. The only SUV driver that drives fast is O.J. Simpson, but he 's got a good reason. (Note: watch out O.J., Karma works).

On the way back home I caught up with a Ranger at the Beverly Glen red light. The Rangers like to drive rather slowly. I knew that if I drove in my usual style home there would be a problem. I was in the Mercedes and close to home so there was no point in engaging in a pursuit, or being pursued that is. The Ranger pulled in to the Melhorn Overlook to harass, ticket, and abuse a nice family that just wanted to see the view from Mulholland. Seeing the view was the original purpose of the Road. Watch out for the Rangers, they don't play fair and they are not nice.

By the way, I got out of a ticket in Beverly Hills by telling the Cop this joke:

It only took 12 jerks to get O.J. off.

I was behind you until everyone bunched up at Beverly. You went ahead of the SUV and I was trying to close the gap. That little blue Acura squeezed in on me from my right. This put me 4th in the line and Flatspot 5th.

I can only imagine it was the cup on Dave's roof that cause the horn's to blow.

Yeah Chris, the Rangers are no fun. I was sitting in a dirt overlook one night in my Carrera. I was backed up against the mountain and was sitting there relaxing and talking on the phone to a young lady while enjoying the view. All of a sudden these headlights come flying up, head on, and a truck blocks me in. While I was wondering if I was getting car-jacked, a parking ticket comes flying in the drivers window, and the truck backs up and speeds off. WOW, I had never had that happen before. Ninja parking patrol, it was wierd!

Had a nice run home, totally clear until i came upon this white pickup. Thinking it was a ranger I slowed down but it turned out to be a regular joe who much to my shock, actually pulled over
for me! when was the last time that happened.

Jeremy, a friend of mine had a similar Mulholland experience. Mike M. was just pulling over with his fiance at the Melhorn turnout near Deep Cyn. to enjoy the view for a minute. It was just after 9:00 pm, the B.S. curfew time. He was there for about 45 seconds. A Ranger pulled up behind Mike to block him from moving. The Ranger had his high beams blazing on them for intimidation. The Ranger treated Mike like a damn criminal and was very aggressive. The Ranger said, "We have a no tolerance policy up here". Mike got a nasty ticket that wasn't cheap. He said that he will never come up to Mulholland again in the evening. Too bad, he let the ***-**** win.

The Rangers cheap, unprofessional, offensive, and disgusting way of doing business is quite prevalent on Mulholland. It would be unfair to say that they are all bad however. That would be like saying that all the LAPD is corrupt.

The image below is NOT a photo! It is a portion of a full simulation program by Tom_Pabst@pabstracing.com of Riverside International Raceway. Tom is recreating RIR in simulation
as accurately as possible.

We need YOUR assistance. If any of you have any still photos, color or black and white from
ANY angle of the track or even old video/movie footage Tom would like to see them. He is using them to accurately rebuild RIR as it was at the end of the RIR era.

Once finished we will all be able to 'drive' and 'race' on the newly constructed simulation of RIR.

There are a few RIR tracks that can be driven on via your X-BOX or other programs but I call attest from 'driving' on several different versions at Tom's shop that none have remotely come close to the original.

So with the lack of a correct version of the old RIR Tom has taken it upon himself to re-create the RIR that we all remember and love.

Note that he has included the correct corner worker stations, the old snackbar inside turn 6, even the correct placement of the Union 76 ball(s) and telephone poles with speakers attached. Once finished it will be a identical to RIR as is possible.
