Posted in the Joke's thread but I thought it was too good not to stand on its own merits.

A United States Marine was attending some college courses between assignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.
One of the courses had a professor who was a vowed atheist and a member of the ACLU.

One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes." The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop.
Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, "Here I am God. I'm still waiting." It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him; knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold.
The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence. The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, "What the hell is the matter with you? Why did you do that?" The Marine calmly replied, "God was too busy today protecting America's soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid sh** and act like an A$$H**E.

So, He sent me."

but this joke implies that even if there is a God, his job is to protect American troops

ummmmmm so lets see

God's american? God doesnt protect anyone else but Americans? God hates Iraqis?

that makes a whole lot of sense

what makes even more sense is that my cousin was just killed in Iraq on december 6, 2006 and he was american

so that evem makes more sense

It was a joke, son...and it was a joke about people with extreme beliefs attempting to sway the views of others. In this case, the individual doing the swaying was an athiest. No matter what the extreme, it needs to be reined in and called what it is; a form of fanatacism. THe Marine represents common sense as most people see it. Difference is that most people are too civilized to cold cock the extreme radicals.

Yes, it can be. Subject has been beaten to death here on this board. Anyone who spends a great deal of energy trying to prove the unprovable is a fanatic. The stupidest posts (and I dislike the word "stupid") are the irrational ones arguing the God/no God POV and doing it with extreme passion.

Athiest: anti theist....against god(s)

Faith, or lack thereof is a private and internal thing and should be treated as such.

Don't worry, most of us thought it was funnier than hell. It's the hand-wringing ninnies that got their panties all in a twist; that's what they do best. As an aside, I find that funnier than hell, too.

It seems those with the sanctimonious tendencies of the professor don't like the joke.

Perhaps they've been smacked by an unimpressed Marine at some point. Or, God willing, will be.

"God, if you think this joke is not funny, have me be hit by a red car with beige interior, driven by a female swedish supermodel within the next 15 minutes." During which time I will be in my office, on the 18th floor.
