Curious Genesis of this Story

Iranian officials detained in Iraq

Anyone else remember this story (or a very similar one) from a week or two ago? At that time a story popped up on the newswires (I heard it on BBC) about some Iranian generals or diplomats being captured during a raid in Iraq. There seemed to be a flurry of counter stories (they were in the country for diplomatic reasons) and then it disappeared from the news pages. I figured that they were somehow related to some clandestine diplomacy going on between Iraq and Iran, which as far as I'm concerned Iraq is entitled to do. I've also heard reports that the US troops on the Iraqi/Iranian border actually have a reasonable working relationship with their counterparts on the Iranian side. So the fact that they were there may have been less of a surprise to people as the fact that it had made the news.

But now it happened again yesterday. I wonder if this story will go away as quickly as the first? Or what the real story is? Are we catching the Iranians "red-handed" with the fingers in the cookie jar, or are there more complex maneuvers going on, and the initial story was the "tip of the iceberg"?

Fascinating -- I wonder how it will play out?

John, didn't you know...Iraq is a great vacation destination for Iranians? It's an action packed, war-zone styled theme park.

Glass parking lot would cure a lot of this. They have been asking for it for a long time, and its time to stop waffling. Otherwise the Israeli's are in planning for a raid against them as we speak.

Am sure that several people who were held hostage in our Embassy there by the Iranians 30 years ago would be glad to push the "release" button on the bomb.

Then put out a notice to Saudi that we have a second device in an aircraft that is orbiting Mecca. They have 24 hours to stop supporting terrorism, stabilize the region and to reduce oil prices to $1.50 a gallon level or we release the device. Mecca would be avialable to them in 20,000 years, the oil fields which would not be effected would be siezed the next day.

Give notice to Europe that we are closing our bases there and withdrawing our troops to America. They will form our new border defence force and secure our borders. Should Europe need help with their defences in the future, we take Master Card, Visa and AmEx (paid in advance) for our forces to mobilize.

Miss anything?
