Who needs pro football in this town?

Funny...that's what was said about Gretzky when he left Edmonton to come to the Kings. What's she doing now? Racketeering or something?

Figures.

Well, he wasn´t going to settle down in Sweden anyway..

..they never seem to do, for some obscure reason.

The LA Soccer team is probably thinking, "With Beckham, we can finally lure American sports fans to Soccer!" (which will never happen) so they handed him a ridiculously large contract.

$50 Million a year?!? THat is ridiculous. Alex Rodriguez must be insanely envious. It will be interesting to see whether or not this contract has an effect on the contracts of the other major league sports (esp MLB and NFL)

Beckham's deal is stupider than the stupid ARod deal....which was pretty damned stupid.

I've got no question he'll fill more seats, that the Galaxy might win more games, even more kids may join soccer teams. But Tim Liewicki's (sic?) assertion on sports radio this afternoon that Beckham coming to America will result in America taking to soccer like the rest of the world? Uh....no. Won't happen, not in several lifetimes.

America more infatuated soccer than the NFL? The NBA? MLB? NASCAR? College basketball? Hell, he won't make soccer more popular than HIGH SCHOOL football in Texas. I hope they feel they get their $250M but the re-ordering of America's taste in sports?...I don't think so.

Does US pro soccer as an entire industry clear his $1mm a week salary? Seriously?

I think football is a brilliant game. Always was surprised it never really took off here in the US- well, it has- but only with 13 year old girls. Hopefully he will break a leg and his career will be over, then she'll start making porn...

...If she hasn't already...

Congressman Jack Kemp, renown AFL football All-Star, said in 1986 on the House floor about soccer:

"I think it is important for all those young out there, who someday hope to play real football, where you throw it and kick it and run with it and put it in your hands, a distinction should be made that football is democratic, capitalism, whereas soccer is a European socialist sport."

And you wonder why it's not a popular American sport?

...and you wonder why Jack Kemp isn't President?

P.S> She's pretty but she "ain't all that" as far as I'm concerned. LOTS and LOTS of prettier girls in L.A.

Maybe Beckham will buy her a taco, a sandwich, salad, something please because she will blow away in a strong wind in her current configuration.
