Thank you gaijindabe.

Please! Sandbox, not litterbox.

Does anyone know of a good website/database that compares different jurisdictions for different costs/opportunities/etc?

>>>>(MI and MA lead NY, I think ... hmmmm; also Liberal nanny-states... coincidence?)<<<<<

Correct! Michigan was United Van Lines number 1 'Move-Out' state in 2006 (up from #2 in 2005!). Our economy is number 50 out of ... well ... 50. Despite this, we just re-elected our Democrat Gov. in a landslide. Her new turnaround plan? You guessed it: raise taxes. Let me know where you wind up. I might be right behind you.

My wife and I have been talking about New Mexico lately ...

JP,

I have lived in NOVA so I know what you mean (McLean area), we also go to the beach every in NC on Emerald Isle, so I am very familiar with NC. Someday I would like to end up there as well.

As for Colorado, this year has been an exception for the snow / bad weather. In years past I have ridden the mc to work in December / January.

JP, I'll watch your Mini and 2002. I'll even make sure to keep the oil good and warm. Aways ready to help a Pelican in need. :D

Fla. is no paradise either, I'm getting sick of the overbuilding in the Stuart/St. Lucie areas, but when I look into moving further up the coast the property taxes on new purchases become a real issue. Don't get me started on both auto and HO insurance:(

Jim Richards 01-22-2007 01:05 PM

I escaped FL a number of years ago and will never look back.

Man, I LOVE you guys!!

Actually, I left out the other Swedish problem(s):
CZ 75 SP-01 9mm
H&K USP .45
S&W 469 9mm
S&W 627-5 (performance center)
Walther PPK .380
Beretta CX-4 Storm .45
Remington 1187
CZ 527
Marlin .22

--- and it was getting the CZ 75 onto my permit today that just pushed me over the edge. I'm so freaking done with this state.

what's the story on auto insurance Bill? i always assumed it's the same everywhere but last yr was talking with some fellow waterfowlers in NJ and they said we Md'rs would pass out if we heard what they had to pay in NJ.

Seriously NC is near the top of my 'Eff this place i'm moving to...' list. Somewhere in Co. is on it along with possibly Az/NM. A recent search on realtor.com showed that NM is one pricey place to live!

Anybody familiar with Elizabeth City, NC? Seems like a nice balance of 'close to the water' and 'lots of commerce to support accountants'.

Jim Richards 01-22-2007 01:08 PM

Can't help you there, JP. DC is another lib haven...not gun friendly.

A friend has been living in Gallup for years. His wife is a speech pathologist and makes good coin. He's Noam Chomsky's soul mate and works for the city commission... they're in a mobile home, like 90% of the other folks out there (he tells me). There are just no houses for sale... and 2 or 3 families of Arab descent own a good fraction of the RE in the area.

Not my speed. Neither is Tucumcari ... but it's neat to visit.

Not too familiar with it, but know it's an up and coming place these days. Haven't been there in years, though. Much warmer, and more "interesting" near Wilmington. Wilmington was the largest city in America without an interstate highway for a long time, now that I40 is completed to the city, it's developing too, but not too fast. While hurricanes are something of an issue, it's more protected by it's location somewhat upriver from the coast. My family lived there when I was in the 4th, 5h, and 6th grades. The beaches are 11-15 miles away.

I was only half kidding about up-state winters. But climate does play a part in the quailty of life.

I say pick a band that is right for you and hit the road. Check out the places along the way for work and other opportunities and you may find the place you are looking for..

This may help you: http://www.city-data.com/

Thinking carefully about your post, Arizona is most likely to meet your expectations. Prescott or one of the smaller cities would be ideal. Great weather, good people, low taxes.

dd74 01-22-2007 01:25 PM

Hell, you know where'd I go? I'd go to god damned Mexico. Since all of they are up here anyway, how's about some of us go down there.

Beach houses on the Pacific cost like $80,000 USD.

JP -

I'm not a big fan of most of the Northeast, mainly due to the reasons you've stated + I'm a native CA homeowner, so I can afford to live here.

My last visit to your neck of the woods left me with a very, very favorable view on New Hampshire - the people were great and I like their no-nonsence point of view and respect for personal accountability. I also belive that NH is at or near the lowest tax rate of any of the states.

Good luck

Kevin

Here's similar info, spotlighting the South.

I live in zone 7b for example. The loop of zone 8b in SC is Charleston, following two low country river valleys.
