I say check out Grand Junction, Colorado. Colorado winters are like heaven compared to the east coast grey spitting freezing rain winters. Summers are better too. Fall and Spring are better on the east coast, but we are talking 4 weeks a year. I'm off of the east coast ASAP!

Hurricanes have doubled and tripled our home owners insurance. Property taxes have doubled. Home are too expensive for the area. 275K for a 3/2/2 on a 1/4 acre. Traffice in most places is bad too many people not enough roads. For the first time in 30 years there are more people leaving Florida than coming in. Being a tweener is a good idea. Do not rule out Georgia either. I personally like North Carolina a lot I just cannot convince my wife to leave this stinking state and move up there full time. |
Well I'm actually going after dual citizenship in Sicily. I'm considering a retirement home near the ancestral digs outside of Palermo.
For now though I'm stuck in jersey. Too poor to retire. to old to start a new mortgage elsewhere. But if I could? North Carolina hills for me. |

if he could make $ with only spending a week/mo in the office he could have 2 places to live. If that be the case I'd be west of Kansas and have two trick areas that provided the best entertainment. fwiw.. Wyoming has the best babes in the country. |

Those leaving are not people looking for jobs. The people leaving are high earners and businesses. The tax base is getting smaller. Not a good cycle imo. |
Ahhhhhh.....Upstate New York....Nine months of Winter and three months of lousy sledding.....
Have daughter in Alabama.....Ever experioence a Summer day down there with both the temp and the humidity in the 90's? She used to live in Fla (Titusville) and Huntsville Alabama was a step up!! Consider New Mexico, southern Utah or, if you like the traditional four seasons (our Winters here in Tucson are truncated, although some closeby areas get considerable snow), you might look at Flagstaff or Prescott. |
slacker, please take me with you .

I second Bob's suggestions for New Mexico, Utah, or the northern half of Arizona. Although I was considering Prescott some time ago, but last time I was there it was a sprawling housing tract. Also, if you have lived in the NE all of your life, you might not appreciate the sparse vegitation and open country. I'd look around if I were you by going to some places.

okay, how about Lancaster, PA or nearby. you have Philly (nasty place) and Wilmington (nasty place with lots of banks) for a working base if you don't mind a commute or can work from home 2 or 3 days/week. stay away from the lick-n-stick neighborhoods and you can find some beautiful old and new homes with quality craftsmanship and a nice big yard with room for an 8 car garage.
housing is relatively cheap, taxes are not so great but certainly better than NY, not sure if Pa is a 'shall issue' state or not. Oh, the sausage there is absolutely HORRIBLE but if you can get past that there are some beautiful roads and scenery. |
PA is great for guns. I got my first CCW in Pittsburgh in college.

David --
I'll need at least a couple of people to help ferry my cars to wherever I wind up. I've driven around the country a few times (the only CONUS states I haven't been to are AR, ND, WA and OR -- tho' I stood in MO and pissed on AR, to repay them for what they gave to us). I haven't actually spent much time in northern AZ. I should come up with a reason to go out there and check it out more carefully. PA I like (except for their freaking weird blue laws) and it's reasonably close to "home". Central and Western PA can be gorgeous, and I think inspired half of the model railroads I've seen built. Flatbutt - it's funny; I looked at property in Ireland a while back, and will probably wind up with a cottage parcel in the next ten years... to be able to spend time with my peeps; so I'll have damp overcast weather any time I want it! I actually really like bone-chilling wet weather, anyway. Nothin' 'gainst nobody, but FL is probably not happening... it just "feels" too different. And most of it is as flat as a billiard table, which I can't handle. My research starts in earnest today or tomorrow. The decision/job search may take a while, but at least I'll start narrowing the field. Kos -- I'm just done. When I'm done, I'm done. The 'Cuse is home, but it's not like I have trouble meeting people or making friends. JP |
JP, Seems every other person I know from NY/NJ is moving to NC.
Is this good or bad? |
Rick -
It'll make assimilation easier; or I may be the last straw to North Carolinians, who are sick of the Northern infestation and begin their own exodus to Louisiana or something. JP |
A year ago I took a trip out west to scout out real estate and job markets. I flew to San Diego, rented a car there and drove to El Paso just for the hell of it. I had really had my heart set on Yuma, Phoenix or Flagstaff. Ended up not liking Yuma, liking Phoenix a lot, hated Flagstaff with a passion. I didn't even want to spend the night once I was there and doubt I'll ever return. It felt like walking back into time, lots of truck stops and cheap motels, bad restaurants, etc. It was one step above Breezewood, PA. The drive there from Phoenix was nice though. From there I went to Albuquerque, which I shoudl have skipped for Santa Fe. Didn't like Alb. much. Then went to Las Crucas, which I liked a lot. El Paso was unliveable for me too. Do some exploring.

Should be interesting ten years out. Cuirious if the corporate population is following suit. Oh, have you considered.....? Heh heh http://www.tomshardware.pl/firstlook...ages/pines.jpg |
There's a few wineries near Charleston you may want to visit.
Irvin-House Vineyards neaer Charleston. La Belle Amie Vineyard near Myrtle Beach. Low Country Winery down near Hilton Head. That's not very many, the wine and grape growing business is just starting here. In fact, I'll be at a conference on grape production this week. |
Thanks, Pat!
My brother has been there 3 years, and my sister for a year. I've been a few times (including St. Pat's 2 years ago - at a Japanese restaurant, b/c car bombs were $5...which was a big deal when they still used the little bottles for booze) and, as long as it's between October and April, I love the place! If I could work out snowbirding from Sept-April in SC (and have that be my state of residence) I could probably stand being in NY for the remaining 4 months. JP |
