Prove me wrong.
The Arabs hate us because we are liberals who bang chicks before marriage.
The Europeans hate us because we are gun strapping conservatives. We don't need the Euros because we have Napa Valley. We don't need the Arabs because we COULD have cellulosic ethanol. Greenhouse emissions go down, cow poop has a use, and our water supply is cleaner. The Arabs are left with sand and a lazy society (oil pouring from the ground has that effect on people). We could send them C-130s... full of rice and vaccines.

I don't know about your first statement. All of the Arabs I know banged as many as they could before marrying their virgin.

Tough to prove you wrong on the original post. Could we use a lot less oil and have lots less to do with that part of the world. Yes and yes. Would it be an overall good thing? Yes.
Are Americans willing to drive Yaris's and shovel coal into the boilers of their new oversize McMansions to get there? Most likely not. |

Cellulosic ethanol might take 20 years or more. Sure, we might be able to speed that up with lots of research $$, but who knows?
Personally, I think it's worth the investment. Especially if we can destroy the corn lobby/subsidies and use switchgrass for fuel needs. Uh, what's this about cow poop having a use?

Bad idea. The changes that would be necessary for energy independence and national security.......would step on the toes of the oil and automobile industries. Get real guys, and stop taking your eyes off the target. It's not about national security or soldiers' lives or transportation safety or the environment. It's about money. Commerce. That's what it's about.

Wind and ethanol (made of whatever) are only put in place to grab the latest tax shelter.
Who is the biggest investor in "wind farms"? Wall Street. Supe is right, it is all about the buck. The only clean alternative energy I see is geothermal. There is unlimited heat and not that far down. But how do you turn that heat into not just heat for buildings - but air-conditioning and energy for cars and transportation? |

It's going to be all about battery technology. With that, we can make all the power we need. We've got these really heavy atoms that break apart by themselves, creating intense heat. As I say, if we could make an electric car that could be refueled in a few minutes, our dependence on ME oil would go to zero.
