Parking Tickets

I don't know if this should be off topic or not.

Last Saturday night I spent the night at UCLA and got two parking tickets the same night.

45.00 for not permit and 60.00 motherflippiing dollars for no front license plate.

I had NO idea UCLA parking attendents could give such a malicious ticket.

Is there anyway I can at least fight the license plate one. Who in their right mind would put a front license plate on a Porsche!

Thanks

The front plate ticket is "fix-it". Put some double-sided tape on the plate and attach it to the car, take a picture and mail it in and it'll get dropped to $10 "processing fee"...I can't tell you how many of those I got in Westwood over the summer when taking an LSAT prep course.

What's "malicious" about not having a permit when one is required and getting a ticket because you don't have one?

I have a front plate on my 911 even though I HATE it. Better get used to it because all of L.A. is writing those tickets now due to photo enforcement. I posted this in another thread but there are places in L.A. now where they have BICYCLE cops standing on street corners waving cars over to the curb as they make turns for lack of a front plate. Sucks big time but its true. AND??? Its not a freebie fixit ticket anymore either. Cost me $35 in additon to putting that ugly plate on my newly painted car.

Guess I should think about ordering a new plate for the front. I destroyed the other one by accident a few years ago.

Dave, Don't think you can order one to match your rear. But you can order an indistinguishable copy from Licenseplates.tv

I thought there was a program that allowed you to purchase plates of the correct year from the DMV. I had never checked, so I will keep the website you gave as well.

Thanks Dan!

Nope, you can't buy them from the DMV. You are allowed to have year-correct plates up to 1962 but after that you are not allowed. It is a screwy system and the CA DMV website explains it.

I wanted yellow on blue plates on my mid year car and found out I can't have them...legally

If you buy a replacement plate from that website you have to have them delivered to another state and then transhipped to your California address.

How I "heard from a friend" that you can order personalized plates from the DMV and THEN have the same numeral plates made by the licenseplates.tv website made in the era plate you want. When you go to pick up the plates at the DMV they hand them to you in exchange for your old plates along with your registration stickers. Then IF you wanted to you COULD put those stickers on the repro plate and viola, you're running indetectable era-correct plates.... but as I said, my friend told me this but I would never do it myself!

Ok, we have been getting off topic on this.

I think the point of the thread was not to contest the parking permit ticket, but he is upset about the second ticket. As far as I know, UCLA cops can issue tickets just like LAPD. So, I think it sucks, but I think you are gonna have to pay.

BTW, I have been pulled over twice in my old Scirocco and was "warned" about no front plate, but was able to weasel my way out of the tickets. Uh oh, third time is a charm (or bust).

Dan, I will keep the site in mind. It is the front plate that is bad, so I would not feel bad using a replica, if I chose to replace it. I looked at my old plate and I did fix part of the plate years ago, but need to clear coat it. If all I would need to do is take a picture of it, I can do that

Geeze. My ticket for no front plate was $90 and I was pulled over but let go two more times after that. I think it was worth $90 to keep the 993 looking right. And as long as I keep the other plate in the car and can show a cop I have it, they're usually pretty cool about it.

Guys,

You are just asking for it with this. Sometimes at the worst possible time you could get stopped for a "no front plate violation" and that alone gives the cop the chance to look elsewhere. Have you had one drink too many? Funny hand rolled cigarette in the ashtray? Pistol under the seat and so on. Bodies in the trunk? WMD stashed under the dash?

Sorry but its the law and 99% of the people know it. I live in a state where its not required to have a front plate and thus do not on any of my cars. When they change this I will put one on as I do not need to get hassled when I know the law.

Joe, ironically, when I got my ticket, I was pulled over by an unmarked Camaro that was trying to bait me into racing him. I had no idea it was a cop. He was dying to take me to jail, made me do the field sobriety tests, blah, blah. Finally, when he was about to give up trying to find a reason to arrest me, he walked around the car and I got nailed for no front plate.

What happens if you live in a state with no front license plate law (like Joe in AZ), and then drive into a state with such law? Can you be ticketed for an offense like this? I'm guessing the answer is yes, but does anyone know for certain?

You are ok as long as you can show that you are a resident of the other state, usually by the address on your driver's license.

When I bought my 951, it only came with one plate. It's one of those 80s ones with the sunrise one it - not the stupid new "sequicentennial" or whatever the eff it is ones. I only run the one plate, and I put those "not legal" smoked covers over them. If some cop wants to be a douchebag about it and give me a fix it ticket over that, then fine - I'll explain to the judge or whomever that I was only ever issued one plate and they ought to be going after the guy that sold me the car (it was actually sold using a dealer as an escrow service, so the dealer would be in trouble, I'm guessing, as they're supposed to "know better"). The smoked lens would be a fix it, sign off and immediately go back on. I refuse to capitulate to this sort of Nanny State / road nazi crap in the form of photo enforcement. Screw that.

Or maybe I'll just keep my M.B. registered in CA, since that's my daily driver and start registering all my other cars back in Massachusetts, or buy a place in rural Nevada and register them there. I drive the P-cars infrequently enough (not to work) so I could probably get away with it. CA is getting ridiculous with this B.S. I guess they need the money to give to illegal aliens for free healthcare or whatever. . .
