Windows Frozen Again . . .
Sorry, just have to vent.
Win XP on the Thinkpad X60 is frozen up. Cursor moves, but Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work, apps won't respond, have waited 10 minutes, I'm going to have to power down, then reboot, reopen all my apps, and see if all the work I've been doing is lost. WTF? I mean, WTF? This is not a rare occurrence - it's not every day, but its more than once a month. As I wait for reboot, I am venting from the MacBook.

Am almost back to running state again. That killed about 20 minutes.

Can't, most of the apps I use are Windows-only. They're never going to port Bloomberg and other financial services industry apps to anything but Windows. So I am stuck, I think.

Mine runs great. Something wrong with your laptop or some screwy software that is installed is my guess.

I've seen the same sort of weird things happen on laptops. Try fiddling with your power settings, it sounds like it may have shut down the hard drive or been in the middle of trying to do some powersave thing. Sometimes when that gets interrupted it'll freak out.
Try checking for driver/BIOS updates, that usually clears up power management issues if that's what it ends up being.

I've seen excessive heat and "flaky" memory cause this type of problem...

I cleaned out the processor heatsink on my toshiba last week, it looks like a dryer trap in there

Yep, dust in the fan will cause a PC to act flaky, especially if it occurs after the PC has been on awhile. Reseat the memory chips and blow the dust, hair, etc... off the fan and heatsink and see if that helps.

XP on MacBook - alas, I'm in typical corporate IT bind - techies won't support Macs hence won't let them on the network in, without the VPN most of my apps don't work.

windows on my car used to freeze up on me
then i sprayed some sillicone rubbertreatement stuff on my seals and it went away...
