Vintage-Style Sneakers

Do any of you wear old-school canvas high top sneakers, like Converse? Do you think it looks stupid past a certain age?

What about other vintage sneakers? I see that Adidas and Nike have been bringing back some of their old styles from the 70s, or never stopped making them.

I've gotten the bug for a pair of low tech sneakers. Sneakers without carbon fiber, air chambers, high tech mesh, radio transmitters, GPS receivers, etc.

When I was a kid I remember getting the new PF Flyers, and how fast I could run with the new sneaks. In high school I remember cross-country races in my Adidas Country sneaks. You can still buy PF Flyers and Countrys today. Can't remember what I wore for tennis. K-Swiss maybe?

Thinking about getting a pair of high-top Chuck Taylors. My daughter wears them, look great with her new Stringray bike.

I asked my fashion consultant (my niece) this question.

She says that if you have aged really, really well, like, say, Alain Delon - then by all means yes. She added though that if you have aged like Alain Delon you could wear anything. Absolutely anything. You wouldn't even have to ask.

Here's Alain:

She did add however that the high-tops should be as outrageous as possible - preferably very colourful or checked. Definately not plain black and white - which looks punk and is very gauche.

Here's an example:

I hope that is an adequate reply to this important question.

My niece stresses that she is available for personal consultations for modest fee!

I gave those up with words like plantar fasciitis and Patellar tendinitis crept up into my vocabulary. Cool shoes, poor arch support.

This is funny. I had a pair of checker Vans back in high school. 1981-85
I was just looking for a nother pair today. Not checkered but a simple lace up shoe. I find that I like a flat sole for driving.

For me, being a drummer, a set of high-top Converse was the footwear onstage, Great for double kick work. Yes, I had many pairs in all of the colors available.

Top secret driving shoes; some of the best I've found for pedal feel and the extra width helps heel/toeing as well:

I still wear my suede Puma shoes and love them! I had a difficult time finding them until my trip to San Diego last month. The old school Clydes are back and they still feel and look great!

Delon?

One of the best known French actors or all time. James Dean and Jimmy Stewart rolled into one - if you can imagine that.

In the picture above he is probably 70 or so. Still going strong.

My niece (who's 17) claims he's the sexiest man alive. Here he is in younger years:

I have orange low top Chucks, wanted high top lime green ones. Purchased them five years ago, they always get comments, both good and bad.

If you care wear tie-dye, gotta have some Chuck Taylors.

I do not think they are very good driving shoes as they lack a round heel and are too thick to get all the feel of a driving moccasin.

I "borrow" my sons high top Chuck Taylors for track days. Better for driving than my Piloti's. My son objects, but we're both size 13 and I'm still buying his shoes.

Hmm, I guess I must've had firmer arches when I was 7 y/o. Well, a pair of arched footbeds drops in just fine.

I've been wearing my black hi-top Chuckies for about 30 years (when I'm not in the office).

They give me more pedal room in the Targa.
