Barrett Jackson madness: $71,500 for a poorly restored '66 911?
I don't have the stomach to actually watch the Barrett Jackson auction live, but I check the results every year for a good laugh. The best Porsche laughs this year:
1. A poorly restored plain jane '66 911 $71,500: http://www.barrett-jackson.com/carlist/cardetails.asp?In_AuctionID=221&In_LotNumber=647 Here's the early S registry's appraisal of this gem: http://www.early911sregistry.org/forum/showthread.php?t=13247 2. A miami vice-style white slant nose 930..."This vehicle is so sought-after, several companies now make kits to replicate it's Slant Nose style" (was this ad written in the 80s?) $72,000: http://www.barrett-jackson.com/carlist/cardetails.asp?In_AuctionID=221&In_LotNumber=646 3. A Chevy engined Frankenstein '77 911S $49,500: http://www.barrett-jackson.com/carlist/cardetails.asp?In_AuctionID=221&In_LotNumber=445 4. A 356C Coupe (you read right, coupe not cab) $77,000 http://www.barrett-jackson.com/carlist/cardetails.asp?In_AuctionID=221&In_LotNumber=698 Plenty of near-6 figure 356 cabs on there (not speedsters, cabs!) too, have a look around. There are evidently a LOT of suckers with a LOT of money out there. |

The most I watch is usually the 2 minutes between commercials when flipping through (Speed, what happened to you!). I guess many are willing to pay a HUGE markup just to get you face on the air for a few seconds after your overpriced bid. They need to follow them home and show them banging their head against the wall when they realize what idiots they are.

I'm actually glad there isn't much interest in P cars anymore. They've ruined the muscle car hobby, the average Joe has been priced out.

Whats intereating about that is that historically, BJ was a great place to sell American stuff, and of fairly recent vintage (50s up).
Foreign stuff was often purchased at or even below market value, and was often quite nice. I watched a few fully restored jags slip by for 25% under market. Now, it appears the fever has spread to those who aren't true marque enthusiasts, and are buying into the auction experience. I don't buy that BJ will raise the entire Porsche car market. And those cars that did sell don't appeal to true enthusiasts. I see sales like that as interesting abberations.

I have voiced it before and so I will again.
The people that are buying these cars do not know or care what they are buying as long as it gains in value before the next auction. The cars are simply commodities. If we call them widgets would we be less likely to care what they bid or did with them? Bob

Are you guys serious you don’t go to Barrett Jackson to bid on cars it's all about who can outbid the next a-hole with deep pockets
Like the FBR open coming up, "it's not about golf it's about being seen and have sex with strangers” as per 944(nightlife) magazine here

That is amazing that they would put the BentleyTurbo motor pic with the slantnose write-up.
I would certainly agree that in general these folks have no idea what they are getting as long as they believe it will go up in value. |

Unbelievable!
Not the price (although a fool and his money are soon parted), the ’66 911 wouldn’t pass the laugh test at a Porsche Parade. The engine doesn’t have the air cleaner assembly. Has incorrect hardware almost everywhere including NAPA hose clamps. Incorrect wiring, paint, coil and more. The interior is missing the carpet over the front inner fenders in the foot-wells, no shift boot, no pedal pads and even has red paint (or is it rust?) showing in the driver’s foot-well. A ’66 911 has floor carpet, a ’66 912 has the rubber mat. The horn button is from a ’68. The dash and steering wheel are poorly refinished. The upholstery is terrible. The rear seat backs appear to be ’72-’73 cores. Fuchs don’t belong on an original ’66 (not to mention the finish). Why not 165/78x15 tires? The H4s are much later. The gasket to the RR quarter bumper doesn’t appear to fit correctly. There don’t appear to b rubber gaskets around the rear torsion bar covers. Although this is VIN dependent, it has the later 2-screw horn grills (RF is bent). I’m not sure I can say every ’66 had 4-screw. Look at the poor fit of the RF turn signal assembly. Too bad there aren’t more pictures Best, Grady edit for my lame typos.

Right!!!!!!!!!
Who are these people anyways? They pay $350 to just get a seat, top that off with a premium of 7-10% buyers fee, pre-approved credit and who knows what. Maybe, "hey bud, you got twenty minutes to get that 200K 1993 Mustang out of here"!!!!!! Its great to see the cars and gain some insight to that one of 200 made 1967 Camaro's with a factory installed 8-track, but you cannot help but wonder just what the hell these people do in the real world to shell out the kind of dough to buy these things. If folks look at Barrett-Jackson as the norm, then my restored 1973.5T certainly should go for 100K and I will toss in the extra set of wiper blades free!!! Its often a painful show to watch, especially the Barrett floorfolks standing right in front of your face pushing for just another 50K to make it all work. The folks who buy cannot be rationale beings! Bob

One of the fallacies of BJ is the "no reserve" hype...from what I understand, a fair number of cars are bought back by the consignor, often thru straw bidders, so they end up paying a net of 8-12% of the bid to either a) retain the car if it doesn't sell for what they want or b) to jack the price up so it is "appraised" by the "market" for an exorbitant price.

Definitely agree with all the above posts. B-J has caught lightning in a jar here....put on an outlandish, over-the-top spectacle and people will come and throw money at you. The big TV deal with Speed was a touch of genius.....everybody wants to be a star. Ever notice the number of (mostly) women who seem to be constantly walking between the bidding fools (or the cars) and the camera? Amy Sparks-Lassiter seems to be getting more face time on camera every year, too.
Yes....just like NASCAR....it's all about the show. I tuned out after I saw that a Ford Mustang II (worth about 50 bucks as scrap) sold for almost $8.5K. Where do all these people come from who're able to p*ss away money like this?

The whole BJ experience reminds me of American Idol. I wish Speed TV would concentrate on broadcasting racing, preferably road racing rather than the NASCAR Salad Bowl 500 type of junk. I am fed-up with programing on that channel. One program that really got my goat was "Unique Whips", what's so interesting about an overweight foul mouthed auto shop manager yelling at his "mechanics" about an artificial deadline to put $20,000 of aftermarket junk on an Escalade............GIVE ME A BREAK

Its important to note that the slant nose includes the "sporty white alloy rims." I'll have to remember to put that in my ad when I sell my black cab: "sporty black alloy rims."

Barrett-Jackson is high comedy and a weird celebration of the V-8 as the be-all, end-all, to heck with mileage, ram intake, carbureted, inflated American sense of automotive self.
My son and I watch it just for the strangeness factor. Like the announcers' telling you that "This Chevrofordmercurypontidodgechrysler features the matching Turbohydraulicelectrapushbuttonglide crapulated ratchatatic and the factory correct built-on-a-Friday paint runs as verified by the build sheet." Porsche. There really is no substitute. Brian |

I've been watching Speed for over ten years and once purchased by the Nascar crowd it was all down hill. I used to love the Dakar, WRC, Race of Champions coverage and old vintage Rally shows hosted by David Hobbs.
Tha auction shows are as bad as the Poker coverage on the Travel channel. the worst is a show called Turbo from OnDemand on Comcast. I watched it one night where a guy buys a crapper old Pontiac and turns it into a custom GTO want to be and sells it at a local auto auction. Tthe bids go to $60K and there are two bidders riding it up. One is a short fat guy and the other is this younger stud and hit hot blond wife. I finished watching it and decided to watch another episonde of the same show. Sure enough the guys finds a shttbox Camaro and turns it into a custom. When it goes to auction guess whos is bidding for it, the same two from the other show!! I watched the third episode and the same thing! what a scam! the same crap goes on on Unique Whips, American Chopper, its all done for production! How much of this is done at BJ??
