But when this guy Banning brags about running red lights and driving dangerously fast on a road where theres houses, kids, familys driving along he gets praise????? I'm sorry but I just don't buy it...looks like you guys are brown nosing, rather than thinking. I know mullholland has great history, but everything has its time, and in this current time--Mullholland has lost it's lore. Its just too crowded--and too dangerous. Cruises on Mul are fantastic which is what I hope you guys are doing, and there are great empty roads not far from there which Joseph initially pointed out, (I failed at backing him up). I think if you guys are really goin at it, maybe the real driving should be held there where theres no traffic lights whatsoever.

And what gives you the right (banning) to be even IN "racing mode" on a busy street. Looks like you may need to travel back to the sandbox. I just hope one of my family members isnt driving opposite of you while your "racing" and may lose control.

anyways, once again im not gonna do another grammar check

You are illiterate and don't belong on Mulholland!

It was great to meet you Joseph, and your 911 is very nice.
We will leave the losers behind. They don't belong.
Fantastic things are about to happen.

It was good to meet you too Banning. I appreciate the comment. Thanks for the quick lesson on the surrounding foliage. I hear you have a 911 in your living room? Is that correct:)

Slodave,
Green machine needs a couple of hours worth of work. I heard a clucking in the rear. Might be the sway bar or something else. No runs this week. It will have to wait till I finish my website for dummies book:D

Golly shucks, I'm in such a quandairey...? I been axin 'bout "fun runs" here on this bbs form (I'm a reel new nubeeSmileWavy) an' these Mulholland runs seem really, really ekcitin' an fun, what with all the history an' the drama an' the history an' the speed an' the oncomin' traffic!

I drove it by aksident years ago with my xwife in her Tyoter Silica when we was out lost one Sundy afternoon, but there was a Law Ossifer a follerin' us an she was shreekin' "SLO DOWN, SLO DOWN!" near bustin' my eardrum like a airbag goin off over 'n over (she was a air bag herself an shur wuz 'agoin' off over 'n over on me!) no matter how loud I bellered back at her ta "SHUHDDUP, SHUHDDUP!" so's I could barely here the sireen a'blowin at me like a banshee!

I acourse pulled 'er over then an the Ossifer was reel perlite. It was reel countryfied yet back then an' it turns out that, seein' our outta LA plate, he wuz jus' lookin' out fer our welfare (would've really hated to looze our welfare back in them days, HAHA) by warnin' us ta be exter kefrul accounta sometimes a stupid wild terkey would come acrashin' thru the redlight that wuz up ahead (I bleeve it were the olny one, back then).

Duz 'at still happen?

I got ridda that ole airbag an bought a ole Porsha Nine 11 SC (I think that stands fer Sports Car, get it? HAHA!) an' now I think I'm ready ta join the fray (I foun' that werd in the dikshunairy).........but I'm kinda skeered, (but thas' prolly my fawlt, not the hallered assfawlt HAHA!).

I'm abuildin' curridge, tho (I jus' put a screamin' chicken on my trunk lid an' it reely gave me a lot more confadense now!).

Now that's unique!
A screaming eagle on the front of a 911.
Kind of like a Trans Am 911, without the Trans Am.

You are correct in taking the side of safety. No one wants to hurt any innocent bystander. I agree.
We don't want to revive the crazy old days, they are gone.
We also don't want some idiot talking about what he thinks Mulholland is all about. In this day and age, safety is very important on the road.
Please leave Mulholland to those that understand and respect it. The rest can stay at home, where they belong.

you started with loser, then turkey, now idiot?

For the last time, I will not stand being called names on the internet. What kind of a man are you? I'm sure if you were looking me in the eye you would think twice before saying that, just because the internet is so socially anonymous doesn't give you the right to berate me. I don't believe you, or your snobby, selfish, and immature attitude.

banning, you don't own the road. you just grew up in bev hills, how fortunate

It is too easy to get involved with org's that sponsor on track racing events. Unfortunately, it is also too easy to do something incredibly stupid, like hit and kill someone while racing somewhere that is now unsuitable. After viewing the video a week ago from one of the runs, I can't for the life of me figure out why you would even want to race on that road - it seems from the vid that it would be better suited for a Baja 500 vehicle nowadays. I am NOT trying to bash anyone, but why are you bashing on thinkfloyd for be reasonable and prudent about this. Seems a bit immature to me. Officially off my soapbox...

thank you

It's not like we're racing through a Turkish bazaar and crashing through fruit stands and stuff it's just a spirited run through Mulholland and vicinity

Interesting run today! Nice meeting you Joe, and BTW, awesome ride. Loved the wheels, color, attention to detail, and pretty much everything about your car.. Sorry the ride wasn't as spirited as usual. We got wind of some unwanted attention waiting up for us up there.

Thinkfloyd, we don't encurage braking the law, like running red lights, however, if somebody can succesfully run Mulholland for 20 + years, never crashing, or killing somebody, he must know something most of us don't and deserves a little respect for that.

I also live on Mulholland, and I bought my house there because of the good old road. You got to understand that it's more than an innanimate object for us, it's part of our lives as much as our families, and pets are. Please don't insult Her!

I don't expect you to understand it. You have to drive it 3-4 times a day for years to even scratch the surface of the road driver relationship... anyway before I get too sentimental... i believe in one of your earlier notes you called us (including me) a brown noser. That's the first time anybody has ever called me that! I could easily start riding your ass for it but that will get us nowhere.

My point: watching your language, and being slightly more respectful, will get you further, faster on this forum, and in life in general...

peace out

R

thinkfloyd14 05-20-2007 10:53 PM

Radu,
I understand your point but I never disrespected him or even addressed him for that matter until after he blatantly called me names. Don't I deserve some respect as well. The only reason I even initially posted was to suggest more driving where roads have less traffic.

I apologize for calling you a brown noser, I completely take it back...any why would I ever insult your dog...it would kill me (things huge).

Additionally, If my language was ever out of line I apologize as well, but If I was out of line Banning was x100. He's the one calling people turkey(stupid i guess), idiots, and losers. So if you want to be the voice of reason, please ask Banning to be more respectful as well, I shouldnt even be the one addressed for that matter.

BTW, Banning did crash on Mulholland...he actually described it as the time he almost "died". Its in the king of the hill rsr thread. (too lazy to search for it)---so if he alsmost dies once---then the next time maybe an innocent bystander would be involved also.

Derek,

I agree that everyone should take a breather. I certainly meant no direspect to anyone posting, but simply wanted to chime in on what I thought was a little on the "bashy" side with respect to banning's replies to thinkfloyd. For what it's worth, I grew up in SoCal and am aware of the history of Mulholland, certainly not nearly as much as someone like banning who apparently lives right there. I simply wanted to chime in because I have a close friend whose life was nearly taken from a couple of idiots street racing. It left him in very critical condition for a long time and he will never be 100% again. They slammed into the back of his car at about 60mph (estimated from the skidmarks and damage) while he was at a standstill for a redlight. They did not see him because it was a redlight that was after a slight curve in the road. My friend never knew what hit him... You guys are there and hey, do whatever you want to do, but, sometimes we are not in as much control as we think we are, and you never know what the others around you are going to do. Not chastising, judging, or bashing you guys, but just trying to give everyone else something to think about.

Now then, on a lighter note: Derek, how was the new muffler on the drive?

Jeff Hail 05-21-2007 07:49 AM

This world is becoming a hostile place(Iraq, Iran, Israel, Palistine, etc.), but there is no good reason for two Americans to show aggression towards each other. We want peace within our borders.

Thinkfloyd14, for the sake of all of us getting along, I have a proposition; if you would consider to retract your original statement that "Mulholland's Crapp"(which started this unpleasantness), I would be willing to formally retract everything negative that I have said to you. I will also pass along(thru Derek or Radu) a rare digital copy of King of the Mountain (for you to laugh at, poke at, and get entertainment from), and I will not post to this thread again. You will most likely never see or hear from me ever after that. If this seems acceptable to you, we can part with cordial behavior and direct our energies towards something more worthwhile.

I know that we have free speech and that you can say whatever you want to in this beautiful country, but I am asking this of you as a fellow American to put this behind and move on to better things.

Regards, Chris Banning

porcupine911 05-21-2007 09:45 AM

v8_ranch used the term "street racing". i want to make it clear to all those reading this thread that this drive is not about street racing. we are not racing. this is not a speed contest. we are not trying to emulate the mulholland races of old. we are driving our cars within their limits (and ours), all the while leaving a lot of margin for unexpected events.

now, back to our regularly scheduled programming...

DARISC 05-21-2007 10:32 AM

Hey Chris,

Not to stir the already already vitriolically boiling pot, but why not accept that some "get" the Mulholland legend and some don't?

You're obviously an old veteran of that fabled stretch of road and I understand your having an emotional attachment to it and a well deserved feeling of pride in being part of its history: Mulholland Drive is a precious bit of Americana and always will be (no matter how crappy its paving may have been allowed to become over the years).

But, in and of itself, it's just an inanimate band of twisty pavement without a spirit or a soul to anyone not cognizant of the way it has liberated and set afire the spirits of all the living souls who have driven it as the road so magically entices one to do.

That said, the legend of Mulholland lives on, not in cracking concrete or crumbling asphalt, but in the spirits and souls of all those such as yourself: you guys created the legend!

The road's been defiled over the years by poor maintenance, population growth, lights, stopsigns and proliferating driveways, but the "legend" can really only be defiled by those who built it, and you're one of those guys!

I personally don't think you ought to do that - it detracts from the magic. Let those who don't "get" it, not "get it". It's their loss. They have the ultimate right of refusal. Better to be, methinks, sitting benignly atop your legendary perch, smiling beatifically down at those that you know are not enlightened regarding Mulholland Drive.

Given that, Thinkfloyd14 ought not need to give up his freedom of speech by retracting his "uninformed" opinion as you ask him to do. I don't believe he was attacking anyone, just chiming in. He's obviously a true enthusiast in his own right, however unenlightened, in your eyes (and probably many other's as well) regarding Mulholland.

So, smile down beatifically, you're one of the lucky few who've been to where none can ever go again!

Wish that ole airbag were'nt in that Silica with me all those yars ago - would be great ta have been maybe able ta climb up on that perch myself!

Regards,

David

Shane, couldn't agree more! What porcupine911 (Chis) says about sums it up for us.

As for the muffler... WOW! I know that there has been many debate on this forum as to the bang for the buck (or lack there of) in changing out the muffler.

Things I've noticed:

1. The sound, man... the sound! This muffler is so nicely tuned and the spitting and cussing it does when you let off the throttle is quite inspiring.

2. For a while I was getting a lot of backfires on cold start. Changed the muffler and it's GONE! The car breathes sooo much better.

3. Radu can confirm an increase in power. I was pulling away from him in straights much quicker than before. Leaving him in the dust so to speak. (of course, for those who know Radu, as soon as you hit some corners, he's about 2 inches off your rear bumper). As well, throttle response is a little better, and the low end tourqe seems to be more responsive before the 3K hump.

4. The weight savings! The M&K weighs almost nothing. When we got the OEM muffler off, I was shocked by how heavy it is.

Anyway... back on topic.

I would love to meet you guys on another sunday. It was fun. Very relaxing sunday afternoon.

thinkfloyd14, porcupine 911, and anyone else,
I would love to run with you guys on some of the other canyons like Piuma or Decker.

Piuma/Decker and Mullholand both have there appeal. Mullholand is more chill where the other canyon's are more driver oriented.

SCWDP911 05-21-2007 11:05 AM

OK, last post for me on the topic of racing... really racing is racing, whether your against a driver or against the clock. I didn't mean to imply you guys were necessarily unsafe, but a lot of guys are. I have never seen you guys drive (other than the video), and it is certainly not my point or place to judge. You all seem like decent guys to me. Wish I could take a trip out there to take part of that historic place once. Nuff said on that subject...

Derek, you have me sorry about selling the muffler now. I live in a quiet neighborhood, and honestly, even my wife was complaining. I caved... I am glad someone is enjoying it! When I drove up to the Tennessee Tubs event in Nashville this weekend, I was sorely missing it (always have liked to draw attention...).

Anyway, hope I can get an invite from you guys if I am ever able to be in the area again. My wife and I left San Clemente in 93 and only come back for visits to family now.

Keep the rubber side down boys...

I've missed the last couple runs and am starting to suffer from withdrawl pains. I've been trying to get the brake upgrade completed on the corvair but it's taking much longer than expected. Also the 3.2 litre motor is nearing completion and I'll have Scrufus down a while for that transplant. Maybe it would be best to do both at the same time. Carol has been asking when we are going out next so there is a little more incentive to get out this Sunday.
Hopefully attendence will be good as I'd like to see a couple of you guys again and up on the hill would be the perfect setting for it.

porcupine911 05-21-2007 01:17 PM

joseph (joe?) - i think next sunday will be a "car" day for me. the tentative plan (yes, i'm looking forward to the weekend already!) is to have some fun in the santa monica mountains in my cayman in the morning, drop by "supercar sunday" to see some outrageous machinery, drive some more, then meet my wife (who will bring the 911) and the guys at starbucks for the mulholland cruise.
