Why ask for judgement on the car without providing pics? Is this thread a hoax?

OK guys here's all I could get. The owner wasn't there when I got there (I was told the gas station was closed) and the car was inside a bay, so this is the best I could do.

Will go over tomorrow to get some better (and a lot more!) pics. These will have to do for now, tho.

PPI. VIN number. Drive the car.

That color is not Aubergine but is Lilac. It is a great color which picks up the light and changes hues.

There seems to be tons of "bondo" in it. I would still get a closer look, since you have gone this far. Don't hold your breath, I think your gonna find it's a dog..................JMO sorry

Hard to say from those pictures, but the exhaust doesn't look so horrible considering that it's a ho-made turbo conversion. It could use some grinder+ high-temp paint.

It is definitely a coupe, however. Not sure why the other local guy said it was a targa(?) The rust shown is inconclusive; IOW it could have been the driest car on the planet until two years ago, and now the paint chip and exhaust have a little surface rust from ambient moisture. Or it could be a soggy turd w/ 200 lbs. of bondo. Or anything in between.

Unless there is something really goofy going on w/ your camera, that is not auburgine. Not even close. It looks more like 1987 Dodge Neon Barney purple w/ some SC flares and gold BBS wheels. You fell in love w/ this thing for its looks? Maybe there is some hope for us ugly guys in the world after all. ;)

That car looks like a dog's dinner and I am 4000miles away. If it is truely an 'S' I can see 10 things wrong with it already even from these limited pictures. The seller must have been praying for a buyer like you to come along. Something better will come up. Please please tread carefully Katie. I agree that it is lilac and not aubergine.

For 12k the seller is nuts. Find yourself a nice 944Turbo lot more fun less headache albeit less cache, a fun car nonetheless and a great introduction to Porsche.

Guys, I think the car is actually aubergine, but not Porsche aubergine. I have a BMW 540i that is aubergine and it looks like it is the same color the longhood Katie posted.

Also, regarding her grandma paying for the car, none of us knows her grandmother's financial situation or the joy it would bring to her. However, this is what I would suggest.

1. Get a PPI
2. Get an estimate on the true cost of the bodywork
3. Get an estimate on the $$$ involved in mechanical repairs
4. Total it up including purchase cost, then discuss with grandma
5. Wait for her reaction whether it is a wise decision or not.

when I was 20 years old I tried to convince my dad that I should buy a 1968 Shelby GT-500 KR. My argument was exactly what you propose in appealing to your folks.

My father said that I would kill myself in it, looking back I was a wildman and he was probably right.

Many, many years later I am still pissed at my dad for not lending my the 1K of additional money I needed to complete the transaction.

So I know how you feel, "there will never be another one like this", or "I just got to have this car".......you know what I mean.

More importantly is the fact that after viewing the pics you posted I would have to say that there is something fishy going on with that car, something just does'nt look right. For instance the bumperettes are early ('65-'68).

You do not want to buy something more or less on impulse just to find that you have bought a bondo filled rustbucket.

When it was time to purchased a project to do with my son I made sure to start with a solid car as a base.

I HAVE MADE THAT MISTAKE MORE THAN ONCE! and have lived to regret it. All I am saying is better to pass on this car and wait than to have a car that will take way too much money to repair or made into a reliable and SAFE car for you to drive.

Not so quick - if you are serious, do a PPI, look at the documentation (e.g. VIN, engine number etc), drive the car a bit, then repost here. :) That's the beauty of such a community - you get plenty of free and mostly excellent advice. :)

goodness knows what lies underneath

Is it really worth the cost of a full PPI?

'bout time a gal stuck her head in this thread ...yep I love the colour too but it's definitely not P-car aubergine.

I have spent my life with these cars - I work with the "product" every day. I can write a VERY LARGE book about the mistakes people have made buying cars that are money pits. Even from those couple of photos this car looks to me very much like a money pit. This baby will get you in way over your head and will dampen your enthusiasm...(gross understatement).

I'm not being rude, but how many 911s have you driven? You've got your Dad's 78 SC; right? Great car, but pretty detuned by other model standards. I would think this Turbo-mongrel would have felt like a lear jet in comparison...score yourself some rides in as many different models as you can so you can make a proper assessment of what you're looking for.

I think you should pass. This is one of those times that being complusive could buy you nothing but trouble. You usually only ever get what you pay for; but in this case I think that would be debateable for all the wrong reasons. Keep looking, learning and asking questions of your Pelican friends. The right car will come along. Be patient, take your time...Rome wasn't built in a day ;)

you guys are talking like a little rust is the end of the world. Just because its a porsche doesnt mean it has to be prefect. I say drive it and look at it Alot. Driving it should tell you weather the mechanicals are in order or not and looking at it will tell you if and where its rusted as well as leaks and such. Then if it still strikes your fancy go for the ppi. 12k is definatly too much $ by the looks of it. My 82sc was advertized at 13k and i walked away with it for 9k. just my .02 :)
