trac-loc diff problem for 69 chevelle
So my son is restoring a 69 chevelle and putting in a new rear end. He pulled ou the axle shafts to do some welding on the ends of the diff housings. He now can not put one shaft back in as somehow there are two sets of splines to mate on that side in the diff and now they do not line up?
any ideas? |

On the GM 10 or 12 bolt rear ends, he should be able to pull the stamped access cover off of the center section. That should allow him access to line up the splines while his ever helpfull old man pushes the axle in.

So you do have full access. That looks like a limited slip set-up, so how about loosening up the bolts holding the clutch pack together? Is one set of splines on a disc in the clutch pack? The two bolts visible at 7:00 and 4:00 in the end view look like two of the ones holding the clutch pack together.

That looks like a Ford 9" rear end; no?
My thought is that you should be able lock down the other axle, install the mis-aligned on to the 1st set of splines and "slip" the diff until the splines line up. |

Yeah, we tried putting both axles in and attempted to slip it. He will take it to a shop today and get it aligned.
Jeff, I thought of the same thing but was leary to do this as he paid good money to get this setup and perhaps he needs to have them reset it. thanks for your inputs
