I agree that the Subaru has great power, value and racing heritage. But you have to like the look if them and I can't say I care for the styling then again Subaru has always been strange. They have improved that significantly since the 70's and 80's. These kids have no idea what Subaru's looked like before. And kudos to Subaru for there transformation to the cars they have now.

I get the raw experience that the 911 gives me driving the car. I have to work hard to get fast times at the track but when you get it right it gives you the chills on how good it can be. I get run in the straights by the big HP cars and I am fine with that. The kids are modding their cars just like it has always been but it seems that there is much more street racing going on with big HP cars and very inexperienced drivers. The Honda and Subaru's will be the cars that the people will want later in life just like we like the 911. It what cars you grew up with that will be collected.

Everyone thinks they are a race car driver! I thought I was pretty good and was humbled by my first trip to the track. Street diving has never been the same. After the track experience, not having to look out for idiots on the road, cops, curbs or what ever danger lurks on the road, street racing lost all of it's excitement. Just need a track a little closer:D

Porsche will always have the mystique over them IMHO. History, longevity and style.

First of all, while I'm not a fan of Japanese modern styling, I will admit what an overall bargain the WRX is as a performance sedan. If you gave me one though, I'd sell it and find a nice sorted 911 track car. I just returned from my SC's first (and one of what will be VERY few due to its cosmetic condition) track weekend. WHat a beastly-to-handle, but supremely rewarding, car it is compared to the E46 M3 and 996 C4S that I had previously driven on track. I myself hadn't been on track for 3+ years, so I had to relearn the line, learn this car and it's characteristics and braking points, gearing etc. I would wager that punks who race on the street in the modern very-capable performance bargains, would (despite their car's capabilities) kill themselves on a race track, because the same testosterone-fueled stupidity that makes them think it's ok to street race, will burn them badly in Turn 10 at VIR thinking they could take the blind off-camber sweeper at 120. He toasted his WRX on the street, he'd probably do the same on track. Served him right.

I just bought a 2007 Mazdaspeed3 for my daily driver and I am shocked at how fast this little car is. 263hp and 280lb torque and 6spd manual and this car is a rocket. I'm debadging it and putting Blizzaks on it right now. Too bad alot of the kids who drive these HP cars drive them like idiots, endangering others (just like I would have done had I owned a Porsche 911 when I was a 20-something kid)!

I had my pride handed to my by a kid in what appeared to be a stock Scion XB. We were entering a freeway on a two lane ramp, I was in my 325i. Well we tested each other, I would push it, he would match. Everything was safe and we didn't go over 70 for a short period of time on the freeway, but he had way more than I. Kid was safe, but tough. A lot of fun.

Well the point of my story is that we pulled off the freeway and I checked out his car, he checked out mine. His care was immaculate, and SUPERCHARGED. It explained a lot and he had some fun at my expense. What I was most impressed about was his knowledge and how friendly he was. We must of chated for a good 20-30 minutes. He was probably in his early 20's and here I was an old man over 50. He reminded me of what attracted me to cars and the fun of it all (and safety). A real sharp young kid with a neat car. It was fun exchanging some time. I told him that I had an old Porsche and boy he was just as curious as the day is long. But the point is just a couple of guys talking cars.

What amazes me about this thread is the civility and politeness of it, compared to what you'd find on any non-Porsche car blog or forum on the Internet. There, this would long ago have deteriorated into racist name-calling, hysterical foulness and illiterate road rage.

Doesn't matter what you drive, how many wheels are putting power to the ground, how much HP you have under your foot. If you can't handle it, it doesn't really matter if it's a 911 or a WRX or a '67 Chevy Malibu (HI CHUCK).

Another reason alot of older 911 are still around. Older and wiser drivers. If I would have had my car in my teens or early twenties it would have been totaled a long time ago!

To continue the event, I went over to the kid and talked to him while waiting for the CHP to arrive. All he could say was "Man, I had you beat" and all I said was that I wasn't trying to race and that he was lucky he didn't hurt anyone and that it was the wrong place to race. Too bad about your car, I said and he responded. " I've only had it for a week."

All I'm trying to convey here is that, these younger kids need to think...... I'm in my 40's and I used to be a reckless kid.

So how did the CHP conversation go. Did he state anything crazy like "As I was racing that 911...."
That would be awkward to say the least.

Of course, hindsight is 20/20, but in your position I drive really, really slowly until the numbnut goes away. I'd have let him pull out and around first because as you said, by you pulling out he thought that you might be racing and decided to take you on. I used to get kids trying to race me in the old '88, and actually get as many that try to race me in my miata (which is REALLY funny).

I had an SRT4 challenge me the other day ... in my miata ... the miata that does 0-60 in about 8 seconds. Hhahahah.

Did Porsche have anything to do with the design of the Subaru boxer engine?

Isn't that why we are inclined to put 3.6 powerplant's in the back of our earlier cars... for the sake of the WRX and others like it..

I didn't read word for word here, but in that kid's mind, he was racing you. I hope you were able to convince the CHP that you were trying to mind your own business. Several years ago, I had a kid pull a really stupid move in front of me. As he hit another car, I had no place to go (ditch or oncoming traffic), so I hit him in my Grand Cherokee. I get a ticket for "failure to slow to avoid an accident". Went back and took alot of pictures and in the end, the judge agreed with me. My Jeep still incurred almost $5k in damage. I wanted to strangle the little b***rd, but my insurance company settled and even refunded my deductable.

Best advice, stay away!
