I'd drive a Yugo if it did what I wanted, when I wanted, and laughed along with me through every redline.

I have had a couple of WRX (and a butt ugly Neon with a wing) try to test me in my 911. None seemed very fast...Either none of the kids could drive, bad turbo lag, or ??? Each time it was pretty much in a straight line with speeds that were quite low (between 0 and about 75). Pehaps they are just better for top end. A mean looking GTI pushed me once and seemed to be able to pretty much keep up though.
WRX seem like a pretty nice little econobox and a lot for the money. I probably would have driven one when I was a kid too.

I had a 2003 Mitsu EVO with some slight mods. I took it to the track and it performed wonderfully. These are VERY capable cars. I was passing people with MUCH more track experience and MUCH more $$$ in their car.

Still, I got rid of the car and bought another 930. I just love the 911 line of cars. To me they are the perfect combination of capability, class, and artistic beauty. The Japenese cars can match Porsche in capability but are not even in the same league for class and beauty. Why not have it all and own a Porsche?

I will upgrade my 22 year old Porsche to be as competitive as it can be for track days. I'll spend more on upgrades than EVo or STI owners will spend on their car. But that is my addiction to deal with. Those (STI and EVO) are great cars but not what I enjoy driving.

i blew the doors off a new mustang on the way home last night. big wheels, growly engine, lowered, looking bad, lost to my little 3.0 turbo. i looked over after a 2nd gear pull, and he wasn't there. he gave me the thumbs up as we slowed down. gotta blow the carbon out once in a while.

not saying this was the case, but you sound kind of like the guy in the WRX in the original story. :)

OK, I'll admit it. I stop light race my p-car once in a while. Just yesterday I got fed a slice of humble pie from a F-Body Firebird Formula. I held him to about 100 then he pulled a few car lengths on me.

I got in front of him at the next stop light to proudly show him my 1974 plates so he know my 30+ yr old car was able to "ALMOST" hang with him.

...roads were clear and all the other legal disclaimers.

I have owned many Jap cars, all Mazdas. 3 RX-7s and more than a few Miata's so I am familiar with Jap cars. I owed Jap cars at the time b/c A) I could afford them and B) They were all turn key cars (everytime I turned the key they started) and in college and early in a work career that is very important to a car owner plus I lived in apartments and had no garage which is important to a Porsche owner b/c it is a Porsche and not just another of the heard of Jap cars. Yes I loved my Jap cars and yes they had a high level of performance but they were not a Porsche and they do not come close to drawing the level of attention that a Porsche draws. I too like the WRX line. I too had a WRX race me on the interstate and b/c of the inexperience of the driver I killed him. I too have heard stories that end in an opposite manner.

Sheesh... I read most of the posts and find it amusing that many of the 'anti-Subaru' posts are from those that, based on location, most likely rarely see much snow.

For those of us that live in areas where a winter car is a necessity and money does not grow on our trees, Subaru is a great choice. I drove an awd Subaru sedan for years when I commuted 45 mins and loved it. Very reliable and I could 'smoke' most SUVs, trucks, and fwd sedans in the snow and crap. Racing??? No, just getting to work safely on Wisconsin's crappy rural roads in the winter.

The knee-jerk reaction of some that 'Jap is crap', 'only a Porsche', etc. is a clue that some are not as much 'car guys' as they are 'car snobs'. All in my humble opinion of course.

I live near the snow, as well as near the sand. For snow you pretty much have to go with American 4wd. That's not snobbery, just experience talking. For the pavement, well you know that is a matter of preference. I prefer Porsche. I'm not saying all Jap stuff is crap, just my preference. And that's not racism talking since I'm 100% Japanese.

I live in Tahoe. I grew up in Buffallo. So I know a little about driving in the snow. I've owned American 4x4s and European rear wheel cars. Now own a Subaru and a 911. There is no doubt in my mind that the Subaru is one of the best snow cars you can buy.

Viscous coupling limited slip differentials (similar to the 993 and forward system), low center of gravity (helped by boxer engine design), and reasonable weight are key.

Plus if you do have an accident they have one of the highest crash test ratings in the industry.

Many american 4x4s have a high center of gravity, full locking diffs, neither are very good for cruising @ 50MPH between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe on Highway 50 in a blizzard (which I do on a regular basis).

There is no doubt is my mind that the Subaru is a well engineered car. I expect to keep one as daily driver for the foreseeable future.

Yes , I know what you mean, they ( jap car owners) mosquito sounding, want to show you off , I realy ignore them in the city, just grin, since I know I have a BETTER car, but on the HWY, they don. t keep up with me for long, maybe the high rpm's and vibration at that higher speed, scares them and they cant handle it !! (:
