Why Do We Own Porsches?
I Guess what i mean is i am 47 years old and i just bought my first one----ever since i was old enough to appreciate cars i always wanted to own one ---i'd see one driving by and i'd say to myself "man someday i'll have one" but why, everything i have ever read has said they are money pits---"wait till it breaks down see what it's gonna cost you" the beauty and mystique of the car overshadows all the negative b.s. that i have ever read about them----------i have seen a lot of beautiful cars in the world but nothing has ever compared to a porsche---when i went to buy her she was sitting next to a $175,000 lamborguini and i'll be honest i never even noticed the lamborguini until my wife pointed it out----------i guess love is really blind!!!!!-----------i'd like to hear some other opinions on why we all chose a PORSCHE!!!!

It's like a penis enlargement except more painful.
|
Some people try to spit the (pain) difference and just paint their Porsches this color...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1172013311.jpg my way of saying this is non-tech OT |
I've lusted after 911s my whole life as well. As a kid, my Dad had a couple of nice 911s and Porsche's were dominating all kinds of motorsport. So, as soon as I could afford one I bought my SC after a 1 year search. I still remember the first time I saw the car and I think I made my mind up to buy it at that very moment. My first Porsche was remarkably low maintenance and when you factor in depreciation, it was one of the cheapest cars to run that I have ever owned - but without a doubt the most fun!
With my 2nd 911 I am living the dream and taking it to the track whenever I can. I am firmly on the slippery slope and my current Porsche is definitely costing me some money, but I am loving it. Congrats by the way on your first Porsche. Have you posted some pics? |
I think Jay Leno once reported that as a man ages "it" gets smaller so he calculated that by the time he was 65 his would be "normal" size. :D
I've owned or played with Porsches since I was 17. A lot of water under the bridge since then. After driving my first 911 nothing has really been the same. Tom |
'Cause the Corvair doesn't quite do it for me.
|
A passion for sports cars that became an obsession when introduced to Porsche! All of this was fueled with ownership of several VW's in my pre-sports car days!

There are a few cars I could drive and be as happy, but a 911 (I assume that's what we are talking about) in the basically 2-seater class, fits me like a glove. Now, the Boxster fits me like OJ's glove. But, I'm right at home in a 911. Most cars, including the Boxster, I mess with the seat mounts to get the position relative to the pedals and the wheel. 911's were ergonomic before the word was even a thought.
Oh, there's something about the noise that comes from the back, too. :D But, I kinda like Jag's too when it comes to 4-doors. Same deal, hop in and you're "at the controls." If I couldn't have a 911, I'd have a Jag. I've been around a lot of E-types too. They're a lot of fun. But as a guy who had a dozen air cooled VW's the 911 is more natural for me. Did I mention it feels real good to slide into the seat? :) |
Chicks dig 'em...................don't tell the wife I said that...............oh go ahead, I have a comphy couch. :)
|
I was wondering the same thing today - especially after reading the "they always want to race a Porsche" thread below.
I like: Air cooled Quick Classy Rear wheel drive Different and a car...each one unique...with personality. |
Because we like the smell of oil when we drive, like to spend more than our extra money on something, and like the feeling of driving a Volkswagen Bug on steroids!! :)
|
Because my NART Spyder breaks down too often...
|
Going a bit agaist the grain here......
I think of myself as more of a "car guy" than a "Porsche guy". One of the big reasons for a Porsche is how active the local Porsche club is. Lotsa time available to wear a helmet on a track. That being said, I've really come to appreciate many aspects of 911 ownership. The factory engineers really got it right. |
For me, I was passionate about them since I was very young... it had nothing to do with prestige or status or class... I just loved the way they looked and sounded and I fell in lust with the widebodied cars with the more aggressive stance  For me, there is no substitute ;)
|
it's a chic magnet!!
|
Porsches are cheap to keep. Try a Range Rover sometime or worse a boat.
|
I love the smell of my garage in the morning, It smells like VICTORY
|
because its the coolest car ever! well not quite. But its defiinatly the cheapest of the coolest cars ever :) Its deffinatly the coolest car anywhere around my town though

I remember the 1969 Lemans on TV. I didn't care much at the time but dad did. The Fords just got by some German cars at the end. Porsche's.
In '72 dad had an Audi, while waitng at the dealership I wandered by some Porsche cars (911's) their engine was in the back and they looked and smelled very cool. I can still recall that new Porsche smell back then. Dad got me a new 914 2.0 in '73. I'd wanted a 240Z but the waiting list was long. Loved that car as a high school senior and took excellent care of it. The decision came down to a recommendation of a business associate of my dad's who knew a lot about cars. He was German and came by one day after work to visit my dad. I asked him "Gunther which car would you get?". His reply (I can still hear it today) "I'd get za porsha". Turns out he worked and raced for the factory in the 50's. That one sentence changed my life forever. Next year I got my first 911 at age 19. I'm 51 and Porsches have been part of my life ever since. There is no other car for me period......I could care less about impressing girls with them when I was young or neighbors and friends today. The connection I have with these cars is on a much deeper level. |
I told one of my co-workers i had removed my ac and he said "a porsche without ac is like a caddilac without power windows". And he goes on about how iv had the car for 6 months and still no girlfreind. He obvioulsy doesnt get it. I think this saying applys for porsche more than it does for jeep. "Its a porsche thing, you wouldnt understand" :)

and the reason I have an RX7 too. Maybe not as classy and not air cooled but very unique. I wish it was as much fun to drive as my P-car. |

LOL here...and some truth, today, to this image. I bought my first Porsche in 1966, a then new 912. I traded in a 1966 tri power Goat that had under 10,000 miles on it's odo. Value wise in today's market, that was a HUGE mistake. But not in the driving pleasure I enjoyed. You see, back then, there was no "image" associated to owning a Porsche. Unless it was the image of being weird. We were a tight group who understood and enjoyed the quality of construction. We'd all marvel at the engineering it took to get such performance out of such small displacement, etc. We'd wave & flash lights at each other, it was a small world then...we who were "in the know". In this small town, myself and a local MD with a slate gray 356SC coupe were the ONLY Porsche owners. That is, after John Gilson moved away in his 356B. The M.D. was then in his late 50's, a very established guy, me in my mid 20's. We'd get together, he "educating" me on the mysteries of the Porsche 4 banger. Ahhh, but with the success of the marque, things have evolved. People buy now because OF that reputation. They are buying not brilliant engineering, but cars built to match what is perceived as customer demand. They buy because of the "status" involved in owning the product. This is the natural evolution of any corporation ruled by bean counters, which is what Porsche has become. A very profitable corporation...but the essence, the genius, the sense of family, has been lost. The people involved in the P-car scene have also evolved. As many who have posted here mention, they "always" wanted a Porsche. Perhaps much of this is because Porsches were considered "way cool" when they were kids? I'll admit it, today I don't believe that some of these newcomers...just some of them...are "way cool". Oh, they can wave checkbooks around and brag of other wealth...but that kind of ruins it for we who were around in the years before Porsches were considered "way cool". Thus, I'm dumping my "way cool" car. Been there, done that, and too tired to keep doing it. Then was then, now is now, and then was better! But hey, at least I can vent here & try to explain why I bought the first one, right? :) |
I really never lusted after them until my cousin let me drive his track prepped 73 911s Targa for a day. If I remember right, it was bored out to 3 liters and just worked over. In 1986 when I drove it, it was hella fast and I knew as I drove it around like a maniac trying to die (Honestly, who lends their prize Porsche to their 18 y/o cousin?) that I had to have one of these cars.
I quicky realized I could not afford one and went off into the world of Rotary engines. Then about 2 years ago, I was getting bored with my John Cooper Works MINI and my RX7 and wanted something.... I just was not sure what. I looked at the new Elise, then looked into a MKIV Cobra Replica, then I looked into maybe buildign up a sick 1993 RX7, I kept looking around, Supra? Naw... Hmmm, maybe a classic Mini, nope! Maybe an M3? Nope... I was all over the place then it hit me. I need to find myself a 911. That drive in mycousins car 20 years prior was most memorable. So I bought books and started reading. Then I found Pelican and started reading, then posting. I was disapointed to see the 78-83 911's were only rated at 200HP give or take, I always feared these cars even in my 400RWHP RX7 when I saw them on the interstate. So I set out to find a good 930, that will do the trick... every one I looked at needed an engine. So I read some more, hmmmm maybe a newer model the 1990+ cars had 250HP and up but they seemed too heavy. Then I started reading about the 3.6 swapped cars. Moses has one and others I read about on here. So I set out to find one. It has met and exceeded all my expectations. I am mad at myself for not getting a 911 sooner and not wasting so much money trying to make my RX7 like it. |
Because we can.
|
Because I have a little dick.

Aw Paul - we are not all checkbook waving idiots.
Although I can't imagine the PM's you received over the years - "if you ever think about selling the car, keep me in mind" yeck. yeah right buddy... To me, I've enjoyed the friends I've made more than the cars - they are just the byproduct that's bought us all together. Sort of a secret society for the anal retentive. |
Guys like me? You need to get out more.

there is just something about them that is so inexplicably genius.

I bought it for Our Son (and maybe Our lil Girl) to work on and learn from as we all grew.

why did i buy a porsche??????????????
SO IT WOULD DRIVE MY EX-WIFE NUTS! LOL! |
Me? Definitely the tiny cock. My 911s don't quite make me feel man enough yet, so I'm gearing up for a V8 conversion. Hopefully then I'll feel adequate.
|
When I dream about cars (yes guys, chicks dream about cars), they are 911's and the sound track is the six at full song.

No other car make is as closely related to racing and motor sport. All the legendary circuits and racers. It all sums up one of the most manly activities in history. Driving a Porsche (at least an air cooled) puts us in the picture of being a real MAN.
|
Mother made me buy it...
|
Can't afford a Ferrari???
