North Korea Talks
I have an idea. We should jerk NK around as much as they have jerked us around the past decade, and ultimately give them nothing. I think the country is on the verge of collapse, which is a good thing. We should keep the carrot on a stick just out of reach while we wait for an internal "regime change" to take place, then lift sanctions in return for dismantling their nuclear program after a new government takes control.
To step in and give them ANYTHING now would be to rescue Kim Jong Il on the eve of his demise. To snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, if you will. Kim Jong Il has proven repeatedly that he has no intention whatsover of abiding by any agreement made with him, he just wants the aid he needs to continue to prop up his regime. I don't think that allowing NK to collapse contains any of the same risks that allowing Iraq to does. They have China on one side and South Korea on the other. They are effectively isolated from the world, and the world needs nothing from them.

It might be a good idea to stop feeding about half their population for free.
But that's just a guess... Beyond that, there is almost nothing that can be done. There are no viable military options, they're already under massive sanctions, and the Russians and Chinese will block any further actions anyway just to stick their finger in our eye. If it was up to me i'd pull our troops the hell out of there and let the SK's deal with their own mess. |

Half their population is starving to death under Kim Jong Il. Sure, give them food to set the wheels of revolt in action. But by far the best revolutionary tool is a color TV, cell phone, and a nice four-door sedan.

Clinton missed his chance to kill him. What does the CIA do these days? I think the CIA should send Thai whores with meth problems as gifts to the north korean generals. I think they still like ******* unlike our seventy virgin loving buddies in the middle east..

North Korea has tentatively approved a deal for their disarmament. This must mean they are in imminent danger of collapse. They don't make deals unless they have to. I think we are blowing a huge opportunity by providing them aid.

My recollection is, prior "aid for pause" deals basically resulted in propping up the North Korean government for another couple years, while not actually ending their weapons programs or destroying their existing weapons. I have not heard of any reason why this one is any better.
[Warning - Bush-bashing ON] However, I've been informed in this very forum that President Bush is a brilliant President, or is closely advised by brilliant people, or has a track record of doing brilliant things (it has become slightly unclear which of these I'm supposed to believe). And that no matter how winsome we in PPOT are, the President's advisors are much better informed. So, I suppose, it is as unpatriotic to question this North Korea deal as it is to question anything else that our own Dear Leader does in the realm of national protection. Therefore, I have to advise the rest of you to toe the party line and unquestioningly support our President's decisions. [Bush-bashing OFF]

I truly believe Bush is handling this situation exactly as poorly as Clinton did.
Deep down I hope this is a ploy to jerk NK around, but I have very little confidence that is the case.
