Austin Healy 3000 Mk II project

This is sort of an extension of a thread I started yesterday re: a friend with a Healy project which stalled a few years ago. He has had the body restored less paint and the engine prof. rebuilt. All parts are there except the steering box but it's totally disassembled. He is wanting to sell it as is. I have a nibble from some prof. resto guys in the mid West but we have little idea what to ask in the way of price.

Any ideas on value would be really helpful. My friend is wanting to use the money to buy a well sorted P car if possible.

I would check out Hemming Motor News to see what comparables they have.

I wish I could be of more help in establishing a price, but the Healey 3000 MKII was on my short list before I decided that the 930 was the car for me. The cars I was looking at were zero rust, older restorations (professionally done), with solid menachicals. I was planning to use the car as my daily driver (as is the case for my 930). At any rate I have small kids and thought that the "kid seats" that the Porsche offers would work better for me.

As for price, the cars I was looking at were in the $25K - $35K range...and needed nothing. For the upper end I could have gotten a car that would obviously work as a driver and a show car.

The MKII is desirable because it is the first year for roll up windows yet still retaining the whole "hairy-chested" unrefined sports car image. I think the 3000 MKIII (especially the later BJ8) got to be too luxurious with the wooden dash and such.

I saw one advertised recently for $39K, perfect condition. I would think your friend should be able to expect $20K to $25K as is. At that, somebody who could finish it would be getting a pretty good deal. In the '60s, I had a '56 B100 that I put a Corvette engine in. If I had it to do over again I would've kept the car stock & not sold it. Hind sight is 20-20. The Corvette engine weighted 50 lb. less than the 4 banger tractor engine I took out of it.

Since it has been sitting around, I suspect he will get less, 10-15K. It will take a 10K paint job, and lots of work to complete. Did this on a 60 MGA.

I looked at a Mark II about 10 years ago. The car was listed as partially restored. I met the seller at a store-n-lock to check it out. When he opened the door the locker was filled with car parts. Every single piece of the car was apart. I thought about it for a while, but passed. I was already restoring a 1953 MG and didn't want to inherit another "project." He was asking $3500 for a 1961 tri carb model.

I agree with Steve. Probably worth 10-15K depending on who did the work, how well it was done, etc. Lots of expense left in restoring the chrome, transmission, overdrive, suspension, fuel system, electricals and engine compartment items. Also, coming up with a steering box is big money. It looks like Moss Motors sells them for $2,255.95!! Not even mentioning the interior. Its hard to peg a value with out more detail.

I still want one someday, but it will have to be the right car. If you have more detail, I would be interested seeing it.

I love the 100 and 3000 cars. They are beautiful. I understand that stock they had some issues, footwells that got super hot, moderate brakes, etc....

Here (may be a little dated but really good resource):

I have a Healey Blue 100M. WONDERFUL car. Lots of mojo without any pretentiousness.
