Glass shower doors and other stupid ideas

Three years ago we had our master bath remodeled. Wife wanted clear glass shower doors just like the ones in showrooms and home magazines. They looked great for about a month then soap scum, etc starts building up. Now they just look like crap.

We clean the bathroom once a week. We've used Rainex. We have a water softener. We squeegee the doors after first rinsing them off with just water after a shower. Still stains build up.

Glass shower doors are just stupid, expensive and, apparently, disposable.

Strange, I have no water softener and the only maintenance my glass shower doors get is a wipe down once a week by the cleaning lady with white vinegar... but being a bachelor maybe my acceptable level soap scum is higher than yours.

The only luck I've ever had was a once a week scrub with 'Scrubbing Bubbles". Get it on there, let it sit a few minutes, and then sponge scrub.

Then once a month, 'CLR' scrub, and dip the shower head at the same time.

I keep after mine, cuz sometimes there is someting in the shower I like actually watching.

I guess I expect them to look showroom new for a long time since they cost so damn much. I wanted shower curtains. When they get dirty, just throw them in the washing machine or replace them. Cheap.

Cindy says she uses WD40. Then cleans that off with regular windex...we had pebble glass doors before, those are a real bear to clean.

Wait 'til you have kids and try to give them a bath in the tub with those stupid glass sliding doors. Then you'll really hate them.

We have had a clear glass shower door for over five years and it still looks like new. Whomever is out of the shower last in the morning first squeegies and then dries. Kind of a pain but I like the look of them.

CLR for heavy duty cleaning. Use kaboom for weekly cleaning.

+1

You have to squeegee the glass AND dry it.

My condo in SoCal came with clear glass. When I sold the place after living there for 4 years, the glass still looked brand new.

Maybe it helped that I used a very fine scotch-brite type pad with X-14 (with bleach) on it once a week.

My wife, when she was a kid, she had a friend fall through one and cut her self and bled to death on the floor.

We just tried and used the new soft scrub with clorox. It works really well. I have tried everything else.

I install these for a living use tekon on the glass..... it and the water beads off the glass like quiksilver!!!! glass is very pourous even though it seems smooth and the "stains" that are visible are actually mineral build-ups that actually accumulate in the pours-eventually "etching" the glass---tekon fills in the pours of the glass to eliminate any damage that may occur from water that is left on the glass.........for people looking to install brand new enclosures ask your glass installer for "showerguard"--this is a factory applied interior coating to the glass thatcarries a ten-year warranty----tekon is an aftermarket product that must be applied about once a year.....hope this helps

Excellent info, thanks!

BTW, I've found Lime-Away to work much better than CLR. It comes in different forms, the best being the pump bottle that foams the liquid as it is dispensed.

your softener might need service.. A properly working softener shoud eliminate minerals and leave you with no build-up..
