Can someone explain the psychology of this?

How come when I look in the mirror (any mirror), I do not see a fat guy but rather a pretty fit, 43 yr old? But, when I see a picture of myself, seems I have more chins than Chinatown. Good self-image, delusional or both?

Neither...its because when you're looking in a mirror you can tilt your head a certain way so that the chins do not appear prominent. It is a unconcious reaction. Concentrate on this the next time you look in a mirror...its almost impossible to not do this. When you're looking at a photo you can't do that

psychology? . .how about physics? --in a mirror you have stereo vision . .. this gives true depth. Whereas a flat image is, well, flattened.

Oh no, here we go again, another racist thread!

Have you tried taking a picture of yourself in the mirror? How do you look then?

Maybe the flash from the camera is casting an unflattering shadow.

It is because the mirror is a portal to another dimension - the universe of the mystical and amusing.

Why do you think that they put mirrors on the ceilings in rooms with hourly rates? You look up and see a great looking purched can of a hot babe but in reality it is the wide spread of some dirty crack ho.

What you see is not of this world but rather of another...

Ever tried arranging two mirrors so you see your own reflection the right way round? Very strange to see, but I don't know whether it's a chin-on or chin-off effect.

Years ago (70's and 80's) I used to travel a lot staying in motels.

How many of you who traveled a lot then noticed that in some motels the mirrors were distorted to make you look thinner? It was very subtle but there. You get up in the morning and after a shower and look you feel good about yourself and the fact that the pizza and beer doesn't put pounds on you.

Maybe it is still that way today - I don't travel much now.

Which squeegee are you using on the mirror...the shower squeegee or the toilet squeegee?

always had a mental image of myself much smaller than I actually am. seldom look in mirrors and rarely in photos. once looking at group pics of me and my friends I had to ask who was that big guy in the back. didn't even recognize myself. Didn't realize I was so much larger than all my friends. never saw that guy in my mirrors, just the short skinny guy I thought I was. now there's this old guy staring back at me. must be a defective mirror, cause I know that can't be me.

I just see more gray and wrinkles, for some reason I still weigh what I did in high school (155).
